Some red carpet appearances are defined by trends, while others are all about presence. Amal Clooney’s look at the Albies firmly fell into the latter category, showcasing the kind of old-Hollywood glamour that has solidified her status as a perennial best-dressed icon.

This event was both personal and glamorous. The human rights barrister wasn’t merely attending a gala; she was co-hosting it with her husband, making every fashion choice feel like a powerful statement.

George and Amal Clooney hosted the fifth annual Albies on Friday, October 9, at London’s Natural History Museum. The Clooney Foundation for Justice established the awards in 2022, naming them after Justice Albie Sachs, a prominent figure in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

The ceremony honors human rights defenders, journalists, and activists who risk their lives in the pursuit of justice. This year’s honorees included Kyrgyz journalists Bolot Temirov and Makhabat Tazhibek Kyzy, girls’ rights advocate Vanessa Mwangala from Malawi, and Congo’s Justice Plus. Graham Norton hosted the event, with guests like Brad Pitt, Anna Wintour, Laura Dern, and Emily Ratajkowski in attendance.

Amal, 48, arrived in a custom gold sequin Gucci gown that quickly became the highlight of the evening. The sculpted silhouette featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and a fitted bodice, with rows of sequins cascading into a column skirt adorned with long dangling fringe.

The gown’s color scheme was equally striking. The sequins transitioned from a brighter metallic finish at the bodice and hips to softer gold tones toward the hem. Against the dark velvet backdrop, the dress radiated elegance.

The fringe flowed from the waist to the floor, moving gracefully with each step and adding a 1920s glamour to her look. It was a sparkly, dynamic choice that photographed beautifully.

Amal kept her accessories polished and minimal, opting for Cartier diamond drop earrings, gold pointed-toe slingback heels, and a crystal-covered Gucci clutch. Her hair cascaded in soft waves with an old-Hollywood side part.

George complemented her in a classic black Gucci tuxedo with a bow tie. The couple posed together in front of the dark curtains, both smiling, and the contrast between his understated attire and her high-shine gown created a stunning visual.

Gucci partnered with the Albies for the first time this year, making Amal’s choice far from coincidental. In previous years, she has often paid homage to the fashion house that supports the event.

Versace has been the lead partner since 2023. Last year, she wore a flowing brown gown by Atelier Versace designed by Dario Vitale, and in 2024, she opted for a black velvet Versace gown featuring a plunging neckline and a short train.

In recent years, Amal has favored simple palettes of black, white, and brown, making the gold gown a deliberate departure. The look also harkens back to her first Albies dress, a beaded Versace design, providing a satisfying sense of symmetry for this five-year milestone.

The evening attracted a high-profile crowd to the museum. Brad Pitt attended with his girlfriend Ines de Ramon, who wore a sheer sage lace gown, marking a rare red carpet appearance in support of their friends.

Amal’s gold gown stood out remarkably. In a room filled with eveningwear, the beaded fringe and graduated sequins gave her the most striking silhouette on the carpet.

Fashion commentators quickly noted that she garners attention with nearly everything she wears, and this look only solidified that reputation.

While it would be easy to let the dress overshadow the evening, the Albies focus on the individuals being honored. The foundation offers free legal aid in defense of free speech and women’s rights, and the gala aims to highlight those taking significant personal risks.

This context adds depth to Amal’s fashion choices. When the host turns heads, it draws more attention to the cause she is championing.
