Amanda Seyfried Discusses Sydney Sweeney’s Media Controversies from ‘The Housemaid’
Amanda Seyfried has opened up about the controversy that affected her ‘The Housemaid’ co-star Sydney Sweeney. Almost a year after Sweeney faced backlash over her American Eagle jeans campaign, Seyfried expressed her understanding of how challenging the situation must have been for her fellow actress.
In a recent interview with GQ, Seyfried reminisced about the promotional period for ‘The Housemaid’ when the controversy was still a hot topic online. The ‘Mean Girls’ star shared her desire to support Sweeney while also being mindful not to exacerbate the situation.
“We had a great time on the press tour,” Seyfried remarked about their collaboration. “We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can’t be f—ing easy, where she found herself… I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place.”
Seyfried noted that her approach to supporting Sweeney didn’t involve constantly referencing the controversy. Instead, she aimed to foster a positive atmosphere during their interviews and public appearances.
The actress mentioned that she refrained from discussing the issue unless Sweeney wanted to, as she didn’t want to become “a source of anything.” Seyfried also complimented her co-star, revealing that Sweeney surprised her with a birthday cake and a special bracelet.
While Seyfried empathized with Sweeney, she remained focused on promoting ‘The Housemaid’ during that time. The two actresses continued their press tour, striving to keep the spotlight on the film rather than the online discourse.
The controversy began in July 2025 when American Eagle launched a denim campaign featuring Sweeney. The ad included the phrase “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” which quickly sparked discussions on social media.
Some critics argued that the slogan resembled the phrase “great genes” and could be interpreted as a nod to genetics and conventional beauty standards. Others believed the campaign was merely a clever play on words about denim without any deeper implications.
The backlash became one of the most significant celebrity advertising debates of the year, with various opinions circulating online regarding the campaign and its implications.
Sweeney later addressed the matter herself in a November 2025 interview with GQ, explaining that the reaction was unexpected and that the advertisement was solely intended to promote clothing.
“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,” Sweeney stated.
The ‘Euphoria’ star also defended her participation in the campaign, asserting that she never meant for the advertisement to stir controversy.
For Seyfried, the experience was primarily about supporting a younger co-star during a tough public moment. Her remarks highlight that beyond the headlines and online discussions, there was a collaborative relationship between two actresses navigating a challenging time while promoting their film.
