Amazon Eyes New Spider-Man Series After Cancelling ‘Spider-Noir’
Amazon’s aspirations to expand its Spider-Man universe have faced a setback, but the streaming service shows no signs of abandoning its plans. This initiative began years ago with a multi-title agreement between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, aimed at exploring Sony’s extensive catalog of Marvel characters associated with the iconic web-slinger.
The partnership has encountered challenges. The first project greenlit under this deal, a spinoff titled ‘Silk: Spider Society’ with Angela Kang as showrunner, was ultimately canceled before it could debut, leaving the second series ordered to be the first to actually air.
That series, ‘Spider-Noir,’ received strong reviews and generated significant buzz, but Amazon has now decided to cancel it after just one season. According to Deadline, the streamer is already considering a greenlight for another series based on Sony’s broader universe of Marvel characters, indicating that this setback won’t hinder their larger collaboration.
‘Spider-Noir’ featured Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York whose previous life as the city’s sole superhero eventually catches up with him. The series, which was filmed in both color and black-and-white, premiered on Prime Video on May 27 and was developed for television by Oren Uziel, with Steve Lightfoot serving as co-showrunner.
Critically, ‘Spider-Noir’ performed exceptionally well, boasting a 92% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with 11 Emmy nominations, the highest for any Prime Video series in 2026.
Viewership figures also reflected a strong start, with the show debuting at number 2 on Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart for original series and accumulating 851 million minutes viewed in its first week. Over the first six weeks, total viewing minutes climbed to 2.6 billion, although the show quickly fell out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 and struggled to maintain its initial momentum.
Deadline reports that the high production costs played a significant role in the decision not to renew the series, as producing it in dual color formats was reportedly expensive. With streaming renewals increasingly dependent on the balance between production budgets and sustained audience engagement, the show’s cost-to-viewership ratio seems to have outweighed its critical acclaim and award recognition.
Despite the cancellation, Deadline suggests that the broader Amazon-Sony collaboration is still very much alive, with multiple projects in active development. One of these projects is reportedly close to receiving a series order, meaning fans may soon see Amazon officially greenlight its next Spider-Man-adjacent show.
It remains unclear which character will lead the next series, but Sony’s oversight reportedly includes over 900 Marvel characters linked to the Spider-Man franchise, providing ample options for the studio. Given the swift cancellation of ‘Silk’ and the brief run of ‘Spider-Noir,’ Amazon seems determined to find the right fit before committing to another full season order.
The timing is also significant, considering Sony’s ongoing success with its Spider-Man film franchise. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently surpassed $900 million at the domestic box office and has exceeded $2.3 billion globally, demonstrating that the appetite for the character’s wider universe remains robust, even if translating that success to television has proven more challenging.
Whether the next series will achieve the staying power that ‘Spider-Noir’ ultimately lacked is yet to be seen. For now, fans of Sony’s Marvel characters will need to wait for an official announcement regarding Amazon’s upcoming plans.
