The quest to find Daniel Craig’s successor as James Bond has been ongoing for years, leading to a seemingly endless list of rumored candidates since Craig wrapped up his tenure with 2021’s ‘No Time to Die.’ Following Amazon MGM Studios’ acquisition of the franchise, the casting process has become more structured, with director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman spearheading a careful search for the next 007.

This process has already seen several rounds of auditions, trimming an initially extensive list of hopefuls down to fewer than 20 serious contenders earlier this year. Reports indicate a preference for casting a younger actor who can evolve with the role and sustain the franchise over multiple films, rather than opting for an established star stepping directly into Bond’s shoes.

Now, the search seems to be entering its final phase. According to Collider, Amazon has moved into a final round of auditions, seeking a younger actor capable of anchoring the franchise for three or four films moving forward. Casting director Nina Gold has emphasized that finding someone who can commit long-term is a key priority for the production team.

Names circulating in the casting discussions include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack Lowden, Harris Dickinson, Louis Partridge, and Patrick Gibson, who previously voiced Bond in the video game ‘007 First Light.’ While Amazon has not confirmed any casting decisions, insiders suggest an announcement could arrive before the end of 2026, with production potentially starting in 2027.

Not every name initially linked to the role has remained viable throughout this lengthy search. Idris Elba, a long-time fan favorite, publicly withdrew from consideration after expressing frustration that discussions about his potential casting often focused on his race rather than his qualifications for the role.

Henry Cavill has also distanced himself from the role, previously stating he would prefer to portray a Bond villain rather than take on 007 himself. Given Amazon’s clear preference for a younger actor who can grow into the franchise over multiple films, both Elba and Cavill seem to have effectively aged out of serious consideration as the studio’s vision for the character’s next chapter has taken shape.

Throughout the prolonged casting process, prediction markets have consistently favored Callum Turner as the frontrunner, with betting odds placing him ahead of other contenders like Josh O’Connor, Jacob Elordi, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Some reports even suggest that Turner may have quietly secured the role, although nothing has been officially confirmed by Amazon or the production team.

Elordi has also been a consistent name in the mix, with some outlets labeling him as a “top” pick for Villeneuve specifically and noting that he has met directly with the director and producers regarding the project. If Elordi were to be cast, he would become the youngest actor ever to play Bond at 28 and only the second Australian to take on the role, following George Lazenby in ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.’
