‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Ted Tackles New Challenges in “Curiouser and Curiouser”
‘Ted Lasso‘ has made its highly anticipated return to Apple TV+ after a three-year hiatus, and the fourth season quickly immerses its titular character in new challenges. The season opener primarily focused on Ted’s journey back to the U.S., highlighting the emotional factors that led him to leave Kansas, where Michelle and Henry are set to join him soon, to take on the task of coaching AFC Richmond’s newly established women’s team.
Episode two, titled “Curiouser and Curiouser,” propels Ted back into the hustle and bustle of London. He has settled into a rented room above The Crown and Anchor pub, managed by Mae, a devoted Richmond supporter who is genuinely excited about his return. Instead of his usual “Biscuits with the Boss” routine, Ted surprises Rebecca with Kansas City barbecue, indicating that while some things have changed, his signature charm remains intact.
The episode delves into the challenges faced by the new women’s team, starting with the inadequate facilities where players are squeezed into a cramped area with just one bathroom instead of a proper locker room, an issue Ted is quick to address. This disparity also reflects in the public perception of the team, as Ted finds himself fielding mostly questions about the men’s team during his press conference, while Rebecca tries to counter the club’s sexism by delivering empowering speeches and ordering feminist literature for the office.
At the heart of the episode is Ted’s developing relationship with assistant coach Alice Chilton, portrayed by Tanya Reynolds. Initially introduced as sharp-tongued and resentful of Ted’s head coaching position, Alice begins the episode by announcing her resignation to Rebecca. However, Ted’s characteristic honesty leads him to confront her directly about her feelings, rather than shying away from the tension.
This candid approach gradually softens Alice’s defenses throughout the episode. When a player suffers a serious injury during practice, Alice rushes to assist, later referring to the injured player as part of “our” team, a subtle yet significant shift that shows she still views herself as integral to Richmond’s future despite her frustrations. Ted recognizes this change and works to persuade her to stay, appealing to her past as a talented player whose career was cut short by injury.

By the end of the episode, Ted’s persistence pays off. He reveals to Alice that he understands her full story, which deeply moves her, leading her to decide to remain as his assistant coach. Ted leaves her a parting gift as a gesture of goodwill, though its contents remain a mystery for now.
Another key storyline follows Coach Beard, who has been working as an assistant under Roy Kent with the men’s team since Ted’s departure. Recognizing Beard’s desire to reunite with Ted, Roy ultimately releases him from the men’s squad, allowing him to rejoin his best friend. Beard arrives, thrilled to share the news with Ted just as his conversation with Alice concludes, resulting in a joyful reunion between the two longtime friends, while Beard’s wife Jane watches on, visibly uncertain about what this means for their relationship.
With Alice choosing to stay and Beard officially back by Ted’s side, Richmond’s new women’s team now has its complete coaching staff ready for the remainder of the season.
