The mutants are making their way back home, and Marvel Animation is set to conclude one of its most celebrated seasons with a finale that fans have eagerly anticipated for weeks. ‘X-Men ’97’ has spent its second season spreading its heroes across different time periods, and now the countdown to the final chapter of that saga is nearly at an end.

For those who have been following the weekly episode releases since the premiere, the wait for a satisfying conclusion is about to pay off, and excitement has only intensified as the release date draws near.

‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 debuted on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, exclusively on Disney Plus with a three-episode premiere. Marvel followed this with one new episode released weekly until the finale, offering a more consistent rollout compared to some of the studio’s previous animated series.

The nine-episode season continued with this weekly schedule, with new episodes expected to drop at 12 a.m. Pacific Time and 3 a.m. Eastern Time. Episodes have been released simultaneously worldwide, ensuring that international fans do not have to wait longer than viewers in the U.S.

Episode 8, titled The Dead Man’s Hand, was released on August 5, 2026, paving the way for the true season finale. This final episode is confirmed to wrap up the season on August 12, 2026. The series remains exclusive to Disney Plus and has not been broadcast on television.

Marvel Studios recently held an advance screening for the last two episodes with cast and creative team members, and reports from that event indicate that the finale truly delivers. Season 2 has explored three distinct time periods: ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE, a distant future in 3999 AD, and the present day, all while En Sabah Nur establishes himself as Apocalypse, the season’s primary antagonist.

At the special screening, Marvel Studios’ Head of Television and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, hinted that Season 3 is already completed, with Seasons 4 and 5 also in development.

This level of confidence for a show that has just concluded its highly anticipated second season suggests that the mutant saga is being prioritized as a long-term project rather than a mere revival.

Fans are also speculating that Onslaught could emerge as the main villain for Season 3, based on clues dropped throughout the current season. Whether this theory holds true will likely become clearer once the finale airs and the aftermath of the Apocalypse storyline unfolds.

The official synopsis states that Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team divided and scattered across various eras as they strive to find their way back home. Meanwhile, in the 1990s, new threats and rising mutant intolerance have emerged in the wake of the team’s absence.

When Season 1 concluded, Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Xavier found themselves in Ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, directly encountering a young En Sabah Nur, also known as Apocalypse. Simultaneously, Jean Grey and Cyclops were thrust 2000 years into the future, reuniting with their son Nathan in a world already influenced by Apocalypse’s rise.

The Season 2 trailer showcased familiar characters like Storm, Rogue, Wolverine, and Cyclops, while also introducing mutants expected to play larger roles this time, including Wolfsbane, Polaris, Strong Guy, and Archangel.

Episode 8, The Dead Man’s Hand, has sparked theories that it centers on Gambit, whose playing card was notably picked up by Apocalypse in the post-credits scene of Season 1, leading to speculation about his potential return as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen.

Like the first season, ‘X-Men ’97’ streams exclusively on Disney Plus in most regions worldwide, requiring a subscription to view new episodes as they premiere. Subscription prices for the platform start at $10.99 with ads and $18.49 for the ad-free option.

Throughout the season’s first eight episodes, the average runtime has been around 30 minutes per episode, totaling approximately 4 hours and 7 minutes of content. This provides newcomers with a manageable binge opportunity to catch up before the finale and avoid spoilers circulating online.

As the mutants finally converge back in the 1990s and Apocalypse’s ultimate plan comes into focus, what do you think awaits the X-Men when the finale drops on Disney Plus?
