Andrew Garfield Faces Backlash After Warning Billionaires About His New Movie ‘The Uprising’
Andrew Garfield has always been open about his views, whether discussing superhero films, industry dynamics, or the narratives he chooses to portray. This candidness has established him as one of Hollywood’s more vocal leading actors, particularly as he takes on socially relevant projects in recent years.
His latest film continues this trend, exploring a significant moment in English history that resonates with contemporary issues. ‘The Uprising,’ directed by Paul Greengrass, dramatizes the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, illustrating how oppressive taxes from King Richard II’s court to fund the Hundred Years’ War ultimately drove desperate commoners to revolt.
During a Q&A session following a Los Angeles screening of the film, Garfield made headlines with his remarks. When asked what he wanted audiences to take away from the film, he expressed a hope that billionaires watching would feel terrified.
This comment, captured in footage uploaded by film outlet The Movie Report, was met with cheers and applause from the audience. Garfield elaborated, wishing for the film to resonate with viewers, allowing them to see their struggles mirrored in the characters’ challenges from a distant era.
However, the online response diverged sharply from the audience’s enthusiasm. Critics quickly highlighted the irony of a wealthy actor presenting himself as a champion for the working class, with one columnist humorously noting the absurdity of a multi-millionaire actor portraying a struggling commoner.
Others criticized the film’s production, suggesting that more billionaires likely funded the project than would ever actually view it. Garfield’s estimated net worth of around $16 million became a focal point for critics challenging his statements.
The backlash escalated beyond social media into more serious political critiques. An associate pastor from Virginia remarked that what initially seemed like an intriguing historical narrative about rebel leader Wat Tyler increasingly appeared to be a politically charged commentary, especially in light of Garfield’s public discussions about the film.
In ‘The Uprising,’ Garfield portrays a fictional character known as the Ploughman, one of the leaders of the uprising, while actor Cosmo Jarvis takes on the historical figure of Wat Tyler. The billionaire comment isn’t the only controversy surrounding the film; some viewers previously expressed confusion after early marketing materials briefly associated the film with the fictional character of Robin Hood.
Garfield’s comments came just days after he revisited his long-held views on the possibility of a gay Spider-Man, reaffirming a stance he initially shared over a decade ago while promoting ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ He explained that part of the character’s appeal lies in the ability for anyone to envision themselves behind the mask.
Neither Garfield nor Greengrass has publicly addressed the controversy regarding the billionaire remarks. As ‘The Uprising’ continues its promotional campaign ahead of its release, the discourse surrounding Garfield’s comments shows no signs of abating, adding another layer to a film already attracting attention for its politically charged themes.
