Andy Serkis Hopes for Deeper Alfred-Bruce Bond in ‘The Batman 2’

Andy Serkis, who portrayed Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, has expressed his desire to delve deeper into the complex relationship between Alfred and Bruce Wayne in the upcoming sequel.

While he hasn’t been briefed on the storyline for The Batman 2, Serkis is eager to explore the emotional nuances of their bond, especially under more intense circumstances.

“I can’t wait to see what [Matt Reeves] is going to do with the next one,” Serkis shared. “What I loved about what Matt created in [The Batman] was this sense of a guardian who has not an iota of paternal instinct in him, trying to be a father he could never be, and that was really at the core of their relationship. He really felt he failed the one person that he adores and tries to look after… I’d like to see the exploration of that deepen and go further. I don’t know anything about the story or where Matt’s taking [Alfred], but I would love to see that taken to extreme, but in a more extreme situation.”

In The Batman, the dynamic between Alfred and Bruce is portrayed as strained and emotionally charged. Serkis described Alfred as “a man with logic, rules and structure at the core of his personality – and he’s living with [a young Batman] who is the antithesis of that, and having to deal with this angst-ridden, emo energy” . This depiction deviates from traditional portrayals, highlighting Alfred’s struggle to connect with Bruce on a paternal level

Serkis also emphasized that Alfred’s background as a former soldier and intelligence officer influences his interactions with Bruce. “He is an ex-soldier. He’s worked for the secret service, but one thing he isn’t, is a father or possess the emotional toolbox to be a father. That is really what’s at the core of this telling of the tale of our version of their relationship and I’m thankful that it is a fresh view, really”

As anticipation builds for The Batman 2, fans are hopeful that the sequel will further explore the intricate relationship between Alfred and Bruce, shedding light on their emotional complexities and the challenges they face together.
