Andy Serkis has provided fans with an exciting update on the eagerly awaited ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum,’ highlighting the return of some of Middle-earth’s most iconic characters.

Although specific details about the upcoming film are still scarce, Serkis announced that production is progressing in New Zealand. He expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with both familiar faces and new talents, including Jamie Dornan, who will portray a young Aragorn.

In an interview with Variety, Serkis confirmed that filming has officially commenced after years of preparation. The actor, who reprises his role as Gollum while also directing the film, noted that returning to New Zealand with longtime collaborators Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens has been a remarkable experience.

“We’ve literally just completed a week. We’re finally up and running, so it’s great. It’s really exciting,” Serkis shared with Variety.

This film marks Serkis’ directorial debut for a full Middle-earth movie, although he previously served as a second unit director on all three ‘The Hobbit’ films. He is now taking on a more significant role, balancing his directorial duties while once again utilizing motion capture technology to bring Gollum to life.

One of the key questions surrounding ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ is how it will address returning characters. The narrative is expected to delve into events occurring between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy, offering fans a closer look at Gollum’s journey prior to the original films.

When asked about the introduction of new actors in iconic roles, including Jamie Dornan as a younger version of Aragorn, originally portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, Serkis praised Dornan’s performance, although he withheld specific details about the character’s role.

“I’ve got to say, Jamie’s doing extremely well. He’s fantastic,” Serkis said.

The casting of a young Aragorn has generated significant buzz, as the character is one of the most cherished heroes in fantasy cinema. Fans are eager to see how the film will portray Aragorn before he ascends to kingship and becomes the warrior audiences met in the original trilogy.

Serkis also hinted that the film will blend traditional filmmaking techniques with modern technology. While he has embraced new tools throughout his career, he emphasized that the aim for ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ is to revive practical filmmaking methods, including miniatures and intricate effects.

“One of the things that I really wanted to do with this film was to bring back all of the great filmmaking skills, from miniatures to prosthetics and marry them up,” Serkis explained.

The director also touched on the future of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, clarifying that it will not replace traditional performances in the new Lord of the Rings film. He believes that the emotional connection fostered by actors is something technology cannot replicate.

‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’ is set to hit theaters in 2027, nearly 25 years after Peter Jackson’s original trilogy revolutionized fantasy filmmaking. With Serkis at the helm and new actors joining beloved characters, expectations are already soaring for another adventure in Middle-earth.
