Angel Batista Returns for ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Despite His Death
‘Dexter‘ has always been known for bringing back characters that fans believed were lost forever, whether through flashbacks, hallucinations, or the spectral presence of Dexter Morgan’s deceased father, Harry. This tradition of blurring the lines between life and death has become a hallmark of the franchise, keeping fans engaged even years after the original series concluded.
In its first season, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ embraced this legacy by killing off Angel Batista, one of the last remaining original Miami Metro characters from the 2006 series. Leon Prater shot the retired detective multiple times in his private vault, right at Dexter’s feet, delivering what seemed like a definitive farewell to a beloved character.
That’s why it was so unexpected when David Zayas was recently spotted filming alongside series lead Michael C. Hall in the heart of New York’s Times Square. According to Deadline, Zayas is officially reprising his role as Angel Batista for the second season of ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ despite the character’s death remaining unchanged.
Deadline confirmed that Batista is still deceased, and the method by which the show intends to reintroduce him on screen has yet to be disclosed. Social media footage from the set reportedly shows Batista and Dexter reuniting and embracing warmly, surrounded by extras and curious onlookers who stumbled upon the shoot.
Zayas was seen on location wearing the character’s signature tropical shirt, a straw fedora, and his recognizable leather gun holster, sparking plenty of speculation among fans ahead of any official announcement. He also posed for photos with showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, along with executive producer Marcos Siega, during the filming.
The most plausible explanation ties back to a narrative device that ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ utilized in its first season, where Dexter experienced coma-induced visions of people he had lost. During an interview with Gold Derby, Hall suggested that it’s reasonable to expect Angel to continue living on in Dexter’s mind and heart, hinting that the show might explore this concept further.
This would align perfectly with ‘Dexter’s’ longstanding use of Harry Morgan as a hallucinated moral compass throughout the original series, providing the show with a built-in mechanism to bring Batista back without technically reversing his death. Whether Batista appears as a vision, a memory, or in another form remains one of the season’s most intriguing mysteries as production progresses.

Batista won’t be the only familiar face returning for Season 2. Uma Thurman, reprising her role as Charley, was also seen filming in Times Square around the same time as Zayas and Hall, alongside returning cast members including Jack Alcott, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Sarif, Dominic Fumusa, and James Remar.
The new season is also introducing some heavyweight names, including Brian Cox as a notorious serial killer known as the New York Ripper, a character previously hinted at during Season 1 through case files discovered by Dexter and Detective Wallace. According to the season’s setup, Dexter finds himself caught between two dangerous killers while grappling with what has been described as a full-blown midlife crisis, all while Harrison continues to carve out his own path toward justice alongside his father.
With a star-studded cast, a returning fan-favorite, and a villain even more infamous than anything Season 1 presented to Dexter, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 is already shaping up to significantly raise the stakes. Fans will have to wait and see how Batista fits back into the narrative once filming wraps.
