Few moments from 2024’s superhero lineup have transformed into as enduring a meme as the emotional cameo featured in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ What began as a brief gag utilizing repurposed footage has evolved into one of the most captivating mysteries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, remaining relevant even a year after the film’s theatrical release.

The scene in question depicts Deadpool observing a TVA monitor that shows Thor cradling his injured form while visibly in tears. This footage was actually taken from 2013’s ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and digitally modified to replace Tom Hiddleston’s Loki with Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson. Mr. Paradox quickly dismisses any further explanation, claiming it’s a glimpse into the “distant future,” leaving the film without any resolution to the question it raises.

This unresolved mystery resurfaced recently, and Reynolds finally provided a more substantial response. While on the red carpet for his new action comedy ‘Mayday,’ Reynolds tackled the ongoing intrigue surrounding the moment directly, expressing that he shares the same curiosity as fans.

Reynolds acknowledged that everyone, including himself, is eager for answers, stating, “Don’t we all want to know? Why was Thor crying? I want to know too. We will find out at some point. And I’m excited for people to find out,” as reported in a video by Screen Rant.

This comment adds another layer to what has become an ongoing joke since the movie’s initial release. Reynolds first hinted at the topic on social media back in 2024, cryptically stating that he knew why Thor was crying and couldn’t forget it, a post that only fueled fan theories linking the scene to future Avengers narratives.

Even the film’s director, Shawn Levy, has admitted he doesn’t know the answer, revealing to the press shortly after release that the moment wasn’t designed to set up any specific future storyline. This contradiction between Reynolds’ teasing and Levy’s uncertainty has only sparked more speculation about whether the scene was ever intended to have significance.

The topic remains alive as we head into 2026. At San Diego Comic-Con this past July, Reynolds made a surprise appearance at Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel in character as “Jeanpool,” a denim-clad version of Deadpool, and directly asked Paul Rudd about Thor’s whereabouts and the reason for his tears, only to receive a humorous, evasive response.

Reynolds’ latest remarks come amid fresh speculation about whether Deadpool and Wolverine will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ A teaser shown at D23 in August featured Hugh Jackman humorously appealing to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to “round out the cast,” a clip Reynolds later shared with a playful caption dubbing it a “hostage video.”

‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, and Marvel Studios has yet to confirm whether either character will actually make an appearance. Coupled with the renewed comments about Thor, fans now have two intriguing threads to ponder as the countdown to the film continues.

Whether the mystery behind Thor’s tears will ever be resolved in a future MCU project or remain an eternal inside joke, Reynolds appears more than willing to keep the enigma alive for now. Given the longevity of this particular gag, it wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel allows it to simmer a bit longer before delivering any real resolution.
