Angelina Jolie once shared her thoughts on working alongside Denzel Washington in the 1999 crime thriller The Bone Collector, and her remarks about their on-screen chemistry attracted significant attention over the years.

In The Bone Collector, Jolie portrays Amelia Donaghy, a young police officer drawn into a serial killer investigation. The killer leaves unsettling clues at each crime scene, including bones from the victims. Denzel Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, a brilliant forensic expert rendered quadriplegic after an accident, who continues to solve cases from his bed using his keen intellect and analytical skills.

The narrative follows their partnership as they collaborate to catch the killer. Despite being physically separated for much of the investigation, their bond deepens through constant communication, shared problem-solving, and emotional tension. This connection eventually develops a romantic aspect, primarily based on mental engagement rather than physical interaction.

Jolie later discussed one of the more intimate elements of her character’s relationship with Washington’s character. During an interview with Dark Horizons, she described it in a unique way, stating, “What’s fascinating are the journeys these two characters undertake, and the deep relationship that evolves between them.”

She also commented on a scene where her character employs intelligence and sensory detail to forge a strong emotional and romantic bond. She remarked, “It was the best sex I ever had.” Jolie clarified that she referred to the emotional and mental connection rather than physical intimacy, adding, “It was great seducing someone with your mind, a huge turn-on.”

At the time of the film’s release, Jolie candidly expressed how challenging filming The Bone Collector was for her. She admitted to struggling with confidence while taking on a significant role in a serious thriller. Feeling overwhelmed during production, she questioned her ability to handle the pressure of leading a film of that magnitude. She stated, “I went a bit nuts. From the beginning, I felt as if I was not capable of doing this, of leading a film and being responsible for this, of physically handling this, of saving a life and going in there and being a cop.”

Jolie also reflected on how intense the experience felt, particularly since her character was frequently exposed to disturbing material related to murder investigations. She later joked that the role was mentally exhausting and emotionally heavy, noting that her character’s mindset impacted her during filming.

Upon its release, The Bone Collector received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. Many praised the performances of both Washington and Jolie, with Washington often highlighted for bringing depth and intelligence to a character who is physically limited yet mentally strong. Jolie was also commended for her standout performance in a major early role, which helped elevate her profile in Hollywood.

However, some critics felt the film leaned too heavily on familiar thriller tropes. They noted that while the premise was intriguing, the pacing occasionally faltered, and the story followed predictable crime-thriller patterns. Despite these critiques, the film performed well at the box office and remains notable for the unusual pairing of its two leads.

Over the years, The Bone Collector has gained recognition as an early example of Jolie’s ascent as a major film star and another strong performance in Denzel Washington’s career.
