Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk have turned their heavyweight rivalry into an unexpected alliance, showcased in their latest training video inspired by ‘Rocky III’, shared on social media.

Instead of harboring the animosity typical of major heavyweight rivalries, the bond between these two former champions has evolved into a relationship marked by mutual respect and collaboration.

The footage of them training together on the beach, running side by side and working out in the gym, highlights one of boxing’s most surprising friendships.

Usyk has defeated Joshua twice in world title bouts, significantly impacting Joshua’s career trajectory. However, rather than drifting apart post-fights, the two have frequently been seen together during training sessions, forming one of the heavyweight division’s most unexpected friendships.

Both fighters won gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics and are now training together in Spain, having evolved from fierce competitors to supportive allies. This transformation signifies a deeper connection than mere post-fight reconciliation.

Regarding Joshua, Usyk remarked, “Now he’s my big, big brother. Not my rival, not my opponent. He’s my partner. My brother. Anthony is a champion. He doesn’t have belts now. Doesn’t matter. Champion is a man who never gives up.”

Joshua has joined Usyk’s training team as they gear up for potential future fights, with Usyk pledging to assist his former rival and publicly supporting Joshua’s comeback aspirations. Usyk shared with Sky Sports that they “help each other, work, and joke, and it’s a great time” now that they are “friends” rather than adversaries.

This partnership is founded on a long-term business agreement and mutual respect, as Joshua’s 258 Management and Usyk’s Usyk17 Promotions combine resources for a joint venture aimed at scouting and nurturing heavyweight talent across Europe and Africa.

The collaboration suggests that a third fight between them is unlikely, as they position themselves as elder statesmen of heavyweight boxing. For Joshua, who is eager to regain momentum, training with someone who has bested him twice could provide valuable technical insights and mental clarity. For Usyk, it underscores his respect for Joshua not just as a fighter, but as a person. In a sport often characterized by lingering grudges, their ‘Rocky’-themed beach run symbolizes a refreshing departure from the norm.
