Antonio Banderas Stars in New ‘Above and Below’ Trailer Ahead of Release Date
Shark movies have established a solid niche in the thriller genre over the years, and the latest entry is bringing some surprising star power to the depths. A new trailer has just emerged for a film that merges the terror of cage diving with a full-blown criminal conspiracy, set to hit theaters later this month.
‘Above and Below’ is directed by Jesse V. Johnson, the British stuntman turned filmmaker known for action films like ‘Accident Man’ and ‘Avengement’, based on a script by Tony Giordano. The story follows a group of five close friends embarking on what is intended to be an unforgettable tropical vacation centered around an exhilarating shark cage diving experience.
However, their dream vacation quickly turns into a nightmare when they realize their diving excursion is merely a cover for a criminal operation. As per the film’s official synopsis, the group faces an attack by criminals in open water, leading to a deadly confrontation that leaves two friends, Tatiana and Kaley, trapped underwater with limited oxygen and sharks circling around them.
Antonio Banderas leads the cast as Burns, the ruthless mastermind behind the botched operation. The producers have characterized Burns as a man shaped by violence, broad-shouldered and cold-eyed, whose mere presence commands both respect and fear, treating the ocean as a familiar territory.
Banderas is joined by Laura Marano in the lead role of Tatiana, with Christina Ochoa and Mario Tardón completing the ensemble. Marano, recognized for her roles in projects like ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘The Royal Treatment’, takes on much of the film’s survival-driven second half, using her character’s cleverness and resourcefulness to survive against both the sharks and the men pursuing her group.
Production on the film wrapped last year, with filming locations in Spain, including the Canary Islands, providing a unique visual backdrop for the underwater scenes. The film is produced by Spain’s AF Films, with Capstone Pictures managing worldwide distribution and its Capture division overseeing international sales, already securing deals in markets like Germany, France, Italy, and others ahead of its release.
The new trailer emphasizes the film’s high-concept premise, presenting the danger in stark numerical terms: thirty feet below the surface, only ten minutes of oxygen left, and a single apex predator standing between the survivors and safety. This kind of tight, ticking clock scenario has become a hallmark for genre entries, and the marketing appears designed to fully embrace that tension.
‘Above and Below’ is set to swim into theaters on July 29, right in the midst of a summer filled with major releases. For a film based on a relatively straightforward survival premise, the addition of an actor of Banderas’s caliber as the antagonist adds an intriguing layer ahead of its theatrical launch.
Given Johnson’s expertise in stunt-heavy, action-oriented filmmaking, expectations are that the underwater sequences will prioritize practical tension over relying solely on digital effects to convey danger. Whether the film can establish its own identity in an increasingly crowded shark thriller landscape remains to be seen once it finally reaches audiences.
