‘Aquamarine’ Is Coming Back Disney+ Orders Series Reboot With Emma Roberts
‘Aquamarine’ is set to return, as Disney has officially greenlit a new series adaptation of the beloved 2006 fantasy film. Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot for this project, bringing the enchanting story back to screens nearly two decades after the original film introduced audiences to a magical mermaid adventure.
According to Variety, the new series will feature Emma Roberts, who played Claire Brown in the original movie. Roberts will reprise her role as Claire in the pilot as a guest star while also serving as an executive producer for the project.
The upcoming adaptation is being developed by writer Sarah Watson, known for creating the hit series ‘The Bold Type’. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the original ‘Aquamarine’, will return as director and executive producer for the new series. Susan Cartsonis, who produced the 2006 film, will also be involved as an executive producer.
This new series will explore a different storyline while retaining the magical elements that fans cherish. The official pilot description reveals that the show will center on a teenager named Coral, who relocates to a seaside town and begins to search for answers regarding her missing mother.
The official logline states: “When teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance—and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”

The original ‘Aquamarine’ featured Emma Roberts, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman, and Arielle Kebbel. The film followed two best friends, Claire and Hailey, who discover a mermaid named Aquamarine and assist her in finding true love. Although the film did not receive much critical acclaim upon its release, it eventually garnered a devoted fanbase and became a cult classic.
For Roberts, this new series represents a return to a project that helped her gain wider recognition. Since her role in ‘Aquamarine’, she has enjoyed a successful career with roles in films like ‘We’re the Millers’, ‘Palo Alto’, and ‘The Art of Getting By’. She is also well-known for her television work, including multiple seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ and the series ‘Scream Queens’.
Sarah Watson brings a wealth of television experience to the project. In addition to creating ‘The Bold Type’, she has worked on Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ and developed the CBS drama ‘Pure Genius’.
The new ‘Aquamarine’ series is part of Disney’s recent initiative to revisit classic films and adapt them into television projects. The company is also developing series versions of other beloved properties, including adaptations of ‘Holes’ and ‘Witch Mountain’.
Details regarding the complete cast, production timeline, and potential release date have not yet been revealed. However, with original talent returning behind the scenes and Emma Roberts involved, the new ‘Aquamarine’ series is already generating excitement among fans who grew up with the original film.
