Armie Hammer Reportedly Emotional After Watching ‘Citizen Vigilante’ and Its Hateful Themes
Armie Hammer had a surprisingly emotional response to Citizen Vigilante after viewing the completed film. The actor, who stars in the controversial thriller directed by Uwe Boll, was reportedly shocked by the film’s final version, which took an unexpected direction, according to Puck newsletter writer Matthew Belloni.
The film sparked significant discussion following its release, particularly after Germany blocked its distribution due to concerns regarding its political themes and messaging. The plot centers on Hammer’s character, a wealthy American businessman who takes justice into his own hands by targeting criminal migrants in Europe.
Despite the controversy, the movie gained traction online after Elon Musk shared it on X for a limited time. It later became available on Amazon Prime in the United States, quickly rising to the top of the platform.
However, behind the scenes, Hammer was reportedly distressed by what he saw. A source close to Hammer’s team shared with Belloni that the actor became emotional upon watching the finished film for the first time.
“The first time he saw it, he was in tears,” the source claimed. “He called me and said, ‘F**k. This is hateful, disgusting.’”
This reaction surprised many viewers, as Hammer had chosen to return to acting through a project already steeped in controversy. The film represents one of his first significant roles after a long hiatus from Hollywood due to allegations of sexual assault, emotional abuse, and disturbing private messages that surfaced publicly. Hammer has denied some of these allegations.

Many assumed Hammer was fully aware of the film’s nature, but new reports indicate he may not have anticipated how the final product would turn out.
Part of the confusion seems to stem from Uwe Boll’s unique filmmaking approach. The director is known for using shorter treatments rather than traditional full-length scripts. Hammer previously discussed this process in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, expressing surprise at the limited material he received.
“I was like, ‘Where’s the rest?’” Hammer recounted, describing his conversation with Boll. He recalled Boll’s response as, “No, no, no! Ve just go and shoot and have fun. Ve vant you to be great!”
Hammer also admitted during that interview that he was eager to return to acting after facing career challenges, stating he “would have done a f**king cat food commercial.”
Due to his desperation to work again, Hammer may have accepted the role without fully understanding the details of the final film. The source who spoke with Belloni noted that while Hammer recognized the project had a political angle, he did not expect the finished product to be as extreme as it turned out.
“I think he knew it certainly leaned toward the right, but Uwe works in a very frantic way,” the source explained. “When he saw the final product, he was, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made,’ and he freaked the f**k out.”
The report also indicated that Hammer earned approximately $250,000 for the role. Although he was reportedly dissatisfied with the film, the source suggested he might consider returning for a potential sequel if the financial offer was substantial enough. “It would have to be life-changing money. Everyone has a breaking point,” the source added.
For now, Citizen Vigilante remains one of the most debated films in Hammer’s comeback narrative, with the actor’s reported reaction adding another unexpected layer to the movie’s already controversial story.
