Armie Hammer’s Controversial Comeback Film ‘Citizen Vigilante’ Secures Worldwide Distribution
Armie Hammer’s return to acting has reached a significant milestone as his new film, ‘Citizen Vigilante’, has secured a broader international release.
According to Variety, Quiver Distribution has acquired worldwide distribution rights for the action thriller, although the deal excludes the United Kingdom, German-speaking territories, South Korea, and Taiwan. The company had previously released the film in North America on June 19 and is now expanding its reach to a wider audience globally.
This project has garnered attention not only because it marks one of Hammer’s most significant roles since his career faced challenges amid controversy, but also due to an unexpected boost from Elon Musk.
Musk shared the entire movie for free on X for 48 hours, making it accessible to millions of users on the platform. This move generated substantial online buzz and introduced the film to a much larger audience than many independent productions typically attract.
Director Uwe Boll said he was surprised when he learned Musk wanted to share the movie. “He contacted my U.S. podcast, but not me directly,” Boll told Variety. “I thought that it must be a parody account… I mean, you’re not really thinking that he would contact you, but then it turned out it was true.”
Boll explained that the communication happened swiftly and that Musk asked for permission before posting the film. “Basically, yes,” Boll confirmed when asked if Musk had requested approval. While making the movie available for free may have diminished some potential earnings, Boll believes the publicity could prove equally valuable in the long run.
“There is, of course, a good and a bad side of the X posting,” he noted. “The question you have to evaluate is: Is that bringing more money in the end, or is that costing me a lot of money?”
The director added that independent films rarely receive this level of global attention without substantial marketing expenditures.
Boll also mentioned that the film faced challenges in securing international distributors prior to Musk’s involvement. He stated that it had not yet received a rating in the United Kingdom and had been denied a rating in Germany, complicating worldwide distribution.
“It felt a little like: No, we should, for a short time at least, give this movie to the world,” Boll expressed.
As per the director, ‘Citizen Vigilante’ has generated approximately $600,000 so far through digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Fandango. While the film still has a long way to go before recouping its estimated $2 million budget, Boll is already looking forward to a sequel.
He revealed aspirations to continue the story next year, suggesting that the main character could travel to another country in the follow-up. “When you make a successful movie, you always hope that you can make a second part,” Boll remarked.
The filmmaker also believes Armie Hammer would be interested in returning for another installment. “I think he would be happy to do it,” Boll stated, although Variety noted that Hammer’s representatives had not confirmed whether the actor would reprise the role.
‘Citizen Vigilante’ has received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.

Despite the divided critical response, the movie continues to spark conversation as Hammer works to rebuild his acting career and ‘Citizen Vigilante’ expands into more international markets.
