The Art Directors Guild has voiced strong criticism against filmmaker Martin Scorsese regarding his recent engagement with a generative AI project, labeling it a betrayal of the working artists in the film industry. This statement was shared on social media following the announcement that Scorsese is advising the AI startup Black Forest Labs on its creative tools.

The guild contends that Scorsese’s collaboration with the company undermines the contributions of production designers, illustrators, and other visual artists who have supported his films for many years. They expressed significant concern about the role of AI in creative development, particularly in areas traditionally managed by human artists.

In their statement, the guild directly referenced Scorsese’s remarks about communication in filmmaking. They stated, “Mr. Scorsese asks the question, ‘how do you communicate what you see in your head to your cast and crew?’ He claims the solution is the use of this generative AI program to do the jobs that are rightfully the jurisdiction of Art Directors Guild Local 800 artists.”

The statement further criticized the construction of generative AI models, arguing that these systems depend on extensive datasets that may include copyrighted material sourced from artists without their consent. This raises significant ethical concerns within the industry.

It continued, “Generative AI is only capable of producing this type of ‘cinematic intelligence’ by ingesting large swaths of copyrighted work, likely scraped from the internet without consent, credit, compensation, or transparency.”

The guild also emphasized the vital role of human creativity in filmmaking. They highlighted that art directors and production designers are crucial in shaping the visual identity of films and television shows, asserting that their work cannot simply be replaced by AI systems.

The statement concluded, “The skills of Art Directors Guild Local 800 artists and designers bring the highest level of value to any film or television production. To think their professional contributions can be mimicked or outshone by generative AI… is a betrayal of the collaborative nature of cinema.”

The controversy emerged after Black Forest Labs announced Scorsese as a new advisor for its generative AI tools. The company stated that the partnership aims to “push the bounds of creativity” and enhance how filmmakers develop visual concepts. The AI tool is reported to assist in generating concept art more rapidly for film production.

Scorsese has publicly addressed the collaboration, describing cinema as an evolving medium and asserting that filmmakers should embrace new technologies. He noted that AI could facilitate clearer communication of his ideas with his creative team, including production designers and cinematographers.

He remarked, “With this tool, I can share what I’m visualizing more clearly and efficiently to my creative team — the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer — for them to build on.”

As of now, Martin Scorsese and his representatives have not responded to the Art Directors Guild’s criticism. This debate underscores the escalating tension in Hollywood regarding the role of generative AI in creative fields. While some filmmakers view it as a beneficial tool for expediting production and enhancing communication, many artists and unions fear it could diminish the necessity for human labor and weaken protections for creative workers.

As discussions continue, the industry is once again confronted with questions about the extent to which artificial intelligence should influence the future of filmmaking.
