‘Avatar: Aang – The Last Airbender’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed – Does It Live Up to Expectations?
The Avatar universe is making a comeback with a new animated adventure, and early reactions are starting to indicate whether the franchise has recaptured the magic that made the original series a fan favorite.
‘Avatar: Aang – The Last Airbender’ has received its initial Rotten Tomatoes score, currently standing at 91% on the Tomatometer based on early critic reviews. While the film has garnered strong praise overall, some critics suggest that its greatest strength may also be its most significant challenge.

The animated film continues the narrative of the original ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series, which aired from 2005 to 2008. It follows Team Avatar as they encounter Tagah, a surviving airbender, and embark on a quest to find an ancient airbending staff linked to the restoration of the Air Nomads.
This project marks the first major release from Avatar Studios, a division established by Nickelodeon in 2021 to expand the universe of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and ‘The Legend of Korra.’ Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the screenplay is penned by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost, based on a story developed by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Hedrick, and Kenneth Lin.
The voice cast features Eric Nam as Aang, alongside Dave Bautista, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, Dionne Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, Ken Jeong, Steven Yeun, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan.
Early reviews indicate that the film successfully rekindles the emotional connection fans have with Team Avatar. Allyson Johnson from But Why Tho commended the film’s emotional depth, awarding it an 8/10 and describing it as “heartfelt and emotionally explosive”, marking a welcome return to the beloved world.
Collider’s Aidan Kelley also praised the animation, giving it a 7/10 and noting the impressive visuals. Kelley called the film “drop-dead gorgeous from start to finish,” especially highlighting the return of detailed 2D animation.
However, not all critics were entirely convinced. Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter offered a negative review, stating that while the film tackles serious themes like the consequences of power, the narrative sometimes feels rushed. Scheck noted that the film often transitions quickly between action sequences without fully exploring its deeper themes.
At Comic Basics, Hrvoje Milakovic provided a more balanced perspective. Milakovic remarked that the film attempts to juggle multiple objectives, including being an emotional narrative, an action-packed adventure, and a bridge to future Avatar projects.
“My honest read on ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ is that it is a good time held back by its own ambition,” Milakovic noted.
He ultimately rated the film a 6.5 out of 10, describing it as a solid experience for longtime fans while feeling that there was untapped potential beneath the surface.
The film’s release has also generated buzz after it leaked online before its official premiere, prompting criticism from the production team. Despite this setback, fan anticipation remains high, with many eager to revisit the world of Aang and Team Avatar.
‘Avatar: Aang – The Last Airbender’ is set to premiere at San Diego Comic-Con and will have limited theatrical screenings on July 24, 2026, before becoming available worldwide on Paramount+ on July 25. Based on the early Rotten Tomatoes score, the film appears to be a promising return for the franchise, even if some critics feel it could have delved deeper.
