‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Releases Early in China with Stunning Doctor Doom Poster
China is a crucial market for blockbuster films, and Marvel understands its significance. When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ debuted in 2019, it raked in approximately $575.8 million in China within the first 11 days. This history makes every marketing effort aimed at Chinese audiences particularly noteworthy.
For the upcoming Avengers installment, Disney is rolling out something unique. Directed by the Russo brothers, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to premiere in the US on December 18, and the studio has been revealing region-specific promotional materials as the release date approaches. The latest comes from China, featuring an exciting surprise.
Disney has announced that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will hit Chinese theaters on December 16, two days before its US release. The studio celebrated this announcement with a local poster showcasing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom towering over a vast array of heroes. In China, the film is titled ‘Avengers 5.’
It’s official! #AvengersDoomsday arrives on DEC 16 in #China’s #BoxOffice, as Disney drops #Doomsday’s official local poster. The new #Avengers film, titled as #Avengers5 in China, is #1 most anticipated Hollywood film of 2026 locally, surpassing #DunePartThree & #TheOdyssey. China will be one of the 5 international markets which will be able to screen Doomsday in IMAX theatres.

The artwork emphasizes the film’s scale, with the villain’s green-hooded face dominating the upper section while the heroes gather below amidst a dramatic cloud of light and smoke. It also promotes various premium formats, including IMAX, 3D, and Dolby screenings, indicating the magnitude of Disney’s release strategy for this market.
Additionally, the poster highlights a global early release, reinforcing that China will be among the first to experience the film. Given the franchise’s successful history in the region, this strategic move could generate significant word-of-mouth buzz.
Initial indicators suggest that audiences are excited. On Douban’s list of the most anticipated foreign-language films of 2026, ‘Avengers 5’ currently ranks at No. 1, ahead of ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘The Odyssey.’ This is particularly noteworthy, as those films are among the year’s most significant releases.
Ticketing data also appears promising. On Maoyan, China’s leading online ticketing platform, the film’s want-to-see count reached 253,000, just 69 days before its release, nearing the 264,000 that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ achieved at the same point. For a franchise that has been absent from the main Avengers banner for years, this is an encouraging start.
IMAX plays a crucial role in this narrative. ‘Dune: Part Three’ has secured an exclusive three-week IMAX window in North America, which means ‘Doomsday’ will not be available in that format in the US despite its simultaneous opening. In most regions, the film will only be shown in IMAX in select international markets.
China is one of those markets, with IMAX screenings confirmed back in July. Reports indicate that it is one of only a few international locations where ‘Doomsday’ will be available in IMAX. In regions lacking IMAX, Disney has introduced its own premium certification, Infinity Vision, covering formats like Dolby Cinema, Cinemark XD, and Regal RPX.
IMAX’s CEO has publicly referred to Infinity Vision as merely a branding strategy, which adds tension between the two studios. Nevertheless, access to large screens in China provides ‘Doomsday’ a significant advantage in one of the world’s largest theater markets, potentially mitigating the impact of the format competition at home.

The December 18 release date is already competitive. ‘Doomsday’ was initially slated for May 1, 2026, before being moved to its current date, where it will face off against ‘Dune: Part Three.’ Neither studio has backed down, making this standoff one of the most talked-about storylines of the holiday season.
For Marvel, a strong opening in China could set the tone for its global rollout. With a two-day head start, a top anticipation ranking, and premium screens, all elements are in its favor. As the release date approaches, the studio is clearly focused on maximizing its impact in every market.
