Marvel enthusiasts have been meticulously analyzing every trailer frame, casting rumor, and set photo associated with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as the film’s December release approaches. With Robert Downey Jr. taking on a significantly different role and the multiverse concept finally coming to fruition on a grand scale, expectations for this installment are exceptionally high.

This excitement has spilled into an unconventional arena: prediction markets, where traders wager real money on the film’s performance once critics review it. This unique approach is becoming a popular method for fans to gauge the buzz surrounding a blockbuster months before its release.

Recent figures from Kalshi, a regulated prediction market platform, indicate that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is projected to achieve an approximate score of 84.8% on Rotten Tomatoes. This figure reflects traders’ expectations for the Tomatometer once the review embargo is lifted closer to the film’s theatrical debut.

It’s important to note that this figure is a live, fluctuating forecast rather than a definitive judgment, as the film has yet to be screened for critics. Kalshi’s tracking has shown that predictions have varied throughout the year, with the same market estimating ‘Doomsday’ at around 82% as recently as mid-June, fluctuating within the 81 to 85 percent range.

This earlier estimate already positioned the film above the 75% threshold required for Rotten Tomatoes’ “Certified Fresh” designation, although it still falls short of some of the franchise’s most successful entries. For context, ‘The Avengers’ debuted with a 91% critics score in 2012, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ scored 85% in 2018, and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ achieved a franchise-best 94% in 2019, while 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ ended with a more modest 75%.

Given the early nature of these predictions, they are largely based on sentiment rather than solid data. Aside from a few character reveal videos and a brief teaser released earlier this year, Marvel has yet to unveil a full trailer for ‘Doomsday,’ meaning traders are primarily factoring in franchise goodwill and casting excitement rather than concrete details about the final product.

Much of the excitement revolves around potential cameos. Prediction markets tracking cameo appearances have seen significant trading activity, with contracts betting on a Tobey Maguire appearance as Spider-Man reportedly trading at much higher rates than similar bets on Tom Holland’s version. Total trading volume across Kalshi’s cameo-related markets for the film has reportedly approached $600,000.

The cast has also commented on the immense pressure surrounding this film. During a panel at SXSW London earlier this year, Robert Downey Jr. acknowledged the challenge of following up two of the highest-grossing films ever, with Marvel positioning ‘Doomsday’ as a sort of reset for the franchise rather than a direct continuation of ‘Endgame’s’ box office success.

However, this doesn’t guarantee that the eventual Rotten Tomatoes score will align with the 84.8% prediction or even fall within Kalshi’s current forecast range. Prediction markets serve as an entertaining gauge, but they reflect trader sentiment rather than actual test screenings or critic responses, and many blockbusters have defied early betting odds in both directions.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, allowing Marvel a few more months to build excitement before critics weigh in.
