Sebastian Stan has spent nearly twenty years navigating blockbuster franchises, but his latest role may be his most scrutinized yet. After over a decade portraying Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor is now entering Gotham City for Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II.’

The casting announcement ignited a frenzy among fans earlier this year, leading to rampant speculation about who Stan would portray alongside Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. That speculation has since narrowed, with multiple reports indicating that Stan will take on the role of Harvey Dent, Gotham’s district attorney who tragically becomes the villain Two-Face.

However, the specifics of how this transformation will be depicted on screen remain unclear. Stan has been notably evasive when asked about the topic, providing carefully crafted responses that hint at the character’s dual nature without confirming details about makeup, prosthetics, or the extent of Two-Face’s appearance in this film.

This pattern of vagueness is consistent. When Deadline previously inquired about the significant shift his role demands, Stan kept his answers ambiguous, expressing excitement and a hint of nervousness while striving to surprise himself throughout the process. This type of response provides just enough information to fuel speculation without revealing concrete details.

The ambiguity has been compounded by conflicting reports regarding whether Stan’s character will fully transition into Two-Face in this film. Some sources suggest that the transformation may not be fully realized until a potential third installment, indicating that ‘The Batman Part II’ could focus on building up Dent’s descent rather than showcasing the aftermath.

Adding to the intrigue, Stan has reportedly mentioned playing “many roles in this one” during separate discussions about the project, a phrase that aligns well with Dent’s dual identity. Whether this implies extensive prosthetic work akin to what transformed Colin Farrell into the Penguin in the first film, or something more subtle, remains uncertain.

Stan is no stranger to demanding physical transformations. He has undergone significant changes for previous roles, from bulking up for the Winter Soldier to utilizing heavy facial prosthetics in the A24 drama ‘A Different Man.’ This history has only intensified fan theories about how far Mike Marino, the prosthetics designer behind Farrell’s Penguin makeup, might go for Dent’s eventual scarring.

Beyond Stan, ‘The Batman Part II’ is shaping up to be a star-studded ensemble. Pattinson returns as Batman, joined by Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis reprising their roles. Scarlett Johansson has also joined the cast, with speculation suggesting she will portray Dent’s wife, Gilda. Barry Keoghan is expected to return as the Joker, keeping the film closely tied to the world Reeves established in 2022.

For now, fans will continue to analyze every carefully crafted comment from Stan for hints about what lies ahead. Given the level of secrecy Reeves has maintained around the project, this guessing game is likely to persist for some time.

‘The Batman Part II’ is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, giving audiences ample time to speculate before Stan’s transformation, in whatever form it may take, finally arrives on the big screen.
