‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Surprises Comic-Con Attendees with Doctor Doom’s Army
Marvel Studios delivered a thrilling surprise to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con when Kevin Feige unveiled exclusive footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in Hall H. The trailer was not made available online, leaving only those present at the convention center with a first glimpse of what could become one of the MCU’s most epic battles.
According to a report from Variety at Comic-Con, the footage prominently featured Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom, revealing that Marvel’s new antagonist has a rich backstory intertwined with the Fantastic Four. Instead of presenting Doom as a complete enigma, the trailer hints at a character who has endured loss, betrayal, and inner turmoil before emerging as a formidable threat to the entire Marvel universe.
The footage begins with Doom seated on a throne while Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm narrates his complex history. Her voiceover portrays Victor as someone who was once vastly different, stating, “Victor was always the smartest guy in the room. He used to be different.”
The trailer suggests that Sue, along with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and the rest of the Fantastic Four, are already familiar with Doom before he fully embraces his villainous role. Sue reveals that “Everything he loved was taken from him,” implying that Doom’s transformation into Doctor Doom stems from years of suffering rather than mere ambition.
The Hall H footage also showcased a massive assembly of heroes uniting for the film. Quick glimpses revealed characters from Marvel’s extensive history, including Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Loki, Cyclops, Magneto, and Gambit.
One of the most impactful moments depicted a devastated New York City, with Reed Richards questioning whether Doom was the cause of the destruction. The scale of the devastation hints that the film will elevate the multiverse conflict to unprecedented levels for Marvel.
The most significant reveal occurred when Doctor Doom confronted Thor. Reports from the Comic-Con presentation indicated that Thor attacked Doom with his iconic hammer, only for Doom to effortlessly catch it and toss it aside. He then showcased his magical prowess to overpower Thor, unveiling one of his most formidable assets: an army of Sentinel robots.
The Sentinels are legendary machines from the X-Men universe, originally designed to hunt mutants in Marvel comics and past X-Men films. Their inclusion in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ suggests that Doctor Doom’s schemes may involve not just the Avengers but also the mutant heroes as they join the MCU narrative.
This exclusive footage continues to build anticipation for the December 18 release of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The film is expected to unite various segments of the franchise, bringing together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and characters from Fox’s X-Men films.
Marvel has already hinted at the scale of this crossover through previous promotional materials, including revelations of Chris Evans returning to the MCU, Thor appearing alongside his daughter Love, the Fantastic Four meeting Wakanda, and the classic X-Men team making their entrance.
The film boasts one of the largest ensembles Marvel has ever gathered. Alongside Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and many more.
The return of Fox-era X-Men stars such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Channing Tatum adds even more depth to this crossover.
While fans outside Hall H will have to wait for an official trailer, the Comic-Con footage has already generated immense excitement. With Doctor Doom poised against some of Marvel’s mightiest heroes and commanding an army of Sentinels, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shaping up to be one of the MCU’s most ambitious events to date.
