Theatrical re-releases generally follow a predictable trend, attracting a wave of nostalgic fans before quietly fading from box office discussions within a week or two. This pattern has rarely applied to Marvel’s biggest films, but even by the franchise’s standards, the numbers coming in for this particular rerelease have been impressive.

Marvel’s choice to bring back its 2019 blockbuster with new footage linked directly to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has turned what could have been a simple nostalgia play into a genuine box office event. This strategy seems to be paying off as the film prepares for its broader theatrical rollout.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ is set to kick off its international rollout, with strong presales already building across several major markets ahead of the film’s September 25 return to theaters. India is emerging as one of the standout territories, while China, Latin America, Oceania, and Europe are also showing solid early momentum as the weekend approaches.

In China, the rerelease has already posted staggering numbers well ahead of its official premiere. According to box office tracking, presales for the September 24-27 window reached a cumulative total of $965,000 after just two days of nationwide sales, a figure that surpasses the two-day presale totals of recent major releases like ‘The Batman’ at $313,000 and ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ at $435,000.

The film’s momentum is equally striking in India, where the re-release has already surpassed 100,000 advance tickets, translating to approximately Rs 5 crore in opening revenue. Chennai has emerged as a standout market during this early phase, with the initial batch of available showtimes selling out quickly after going live.

Such nationwide urgency a full week ahead of release is unusual for a catalog title, highlighting the enduring appeal of Marvel’s event cinema among Indian audiences. Given that only a portion of the film’s final screening inventory has been released so far, the current numbers may only hint at what’s to come once wider allocations open up.

The rerelease isn’t merely a nostalgia exercise. Audiences catching ‘Endgame Encore’ in IMAX or Infinity Vision-certified theaters will also receive an exclusive first look at footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ positioning the re-release as a direct marketing tie-in ahead of December’s highly anticipated sequel.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed the reasoning behind the film’s return at San Diego Comic-Con this past July. “2019 was a very long time ago. The world’s a different place. But reminding all of us what it was like to be in that theater, cheering along and enjoying that crazy enthusiasm, is why we’re rereleasing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ on Sept. 25,” Feige said, according to China.org.cn.

What makes this rollout particularly noteworthy is how closely it’s tracking with genuine new releases rather than typical reissue patterns. Industry analysts have pointed out that only a small number of recent titles have posted stronger opening presale numbers, including films like ‘Zootopia 2,’ ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’

This level of performance for a film audiences have already seen multiple times speaks volumes about the anticipation surrounding the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe as it heads toward ‘Doomsday’s’ December release. It also provides Disney and Marvel with a valuable real-time insight into audience appetite before their next major tentpole hits theaters.

With previews already underway and wider international expansion continuing to build, ‘Endgame Encore’ seems well-positioned for a strong opening weekend across multiple territories. Given the current pacing observed in markets like China and India, this rerelease could potentially deliver one of the biggest results a reissue has ever achieved globally.
