Marvel enthusiasts have long speculated about how the studio would justify revisiting the story that concluded the Infinity Saga. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ provided Tony Stark with a poignant farewell, brought Captain America’s journey to a satisfying conclusion, and tied up a decade of storytelling in an emotional finale. The idea of altering that ending seemed unthinkable—until now.

This fall, Marvel Studios has confirmed that ‘Endgame’ will return to theaters under a new title, ‘Avengers, Endgame Encore,’ featuring a custom introduction, previously unreleased footage, and a brand new ending designed to connect the film to December’s ‘Avengers, Doomsday.’

The re-release is set for September 25, just a few months before Doomsday’s premiere on December 18.

Reports suggest that the additional material could extend the runtime by as much as seven minutes, transforming this into more than just a simple re-screening. This new footage is expected to revolve around the Doomsday storyline, meaning that audiences revisiting ‘Endgame’ will experience fresh scenes crafted to seamlessly transition into the next Avengers chapter, rather than merely an extended cut of the original film.

Joe Russo, co-director of Doomsday, has been open about the significance of this re-release. In a conversation with Deadline at the Sands Film Festival in Scotland, Russo emphasized the importance of this rerelease, framing the added footage as a way to connect the two films in a manner Marvel has never attempted before. He described the new material as a vital companion story and a setup for what audiences can expect when Doomsday arrives.

The timing of this rerelease is particularly noteworthy. Robert Downey Jr. is expected to return to the MCU in Doomsday, this time portraying Victor Von Doom instead of Tony Stark, while Chris Evans is also anticipated to reprise his role as Steve Rogers.

Considering that Endgame concluded both characters’ arcs in dramatically different ways, the new footage linking their stories to Doomsday presents Marvel with a unique opportunity to reshape audience perceptions of where these characters have been since the original film’s release.

The rerelease will also introduce a new premium format called Infinity Vision, a certification developed by Disney to ensure top-notch picture and sound quality in participating theaters. This approach is reminiscent of Sony’s strategy with its expanded rerelease of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which returned to theaters with bonus scenes months after its initial run to generate fresh excitement ahead of upcoming releases.

For a franchise that has sometimes faced criticism for requiring too much background knowledge from casual viewers, transforming a seven-year-old blockbuster into essential viewing ahead of its next major crossover is a bold strategy. Nonetheless, given that ‘Endgame’ remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time, Marvel clearly believes there is a substantial audience eager to revisit it, especially with new material as an enticing incentive.

Whether the new footage will feature Doctor Doom directly, expand on the multiverse groundwork laid by Endgame with Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, or take a different direction entirely remains to be seen. What is evident is that Marvel is treating this rerelease as more than just a nostalgic trip, positioning it as a crucial part of the journey leading into Doomsday.
