The long-awaited question surrounding ‘The Batman: Part 2‘ has finally been answered: Barry Keoghan is officially returning as the Joker in Matt Reeves’ sequel. This news comes after Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne first encountered the unsettling figure in Arkham.

Keoghan’s initial appearance in ‘The Batman’ was brief yet unforgettable. He portrayed an unnamed Arkham State Hospital inmate whose grotesquely scarred visage and chilling interaction with Pattinson’s Batman left viewers convinced they were witnessing the early stages of a truly menacing character. Matt Reeves previously described him as a “pre-Joker Joker,” a character still in development, which adds even more intrigue to the sequel.

Since then, Keoghan has been skillfully evasive about his return. When directly asked about reprising the role, he told Variety that he “can’t say much,” adding “we’ll see where that goes,” while calling the original experience incredible. Now, that ambiguity has been resolved, and the announcement has taken social media by storm.

Keoghan won’t be the only notable addition to the sequel’s roster of villains. Reports indicate that Sebastian Stan is in talks to portray Harvey Dent, the Gotham district attorney who eventually becomes Two-Face, setting the stage for a significant character arc in this chapter and beyond. Additionally, Scarlett Johansson is rumored to join the film in a mystery role, speculated to be a character who serves as both a villain and a love interest.

The narrative for ‘The Batman: Part 2’ promises to explore Gotham’s corruption more deeply. Director Reeves has shared insights with SFX Magazine about how the film will delve into unexpected territories for Bruce Wayne, building on elements introduced in the first film. Meanwhile, Zoë Kravitz, who portrayed Selina Kyle in ‘The Batman,’ is reported to have exited the franchise, leaving Batman’s relationship dynamics more open than anticipated for the sequel.

Upon its release in 2022, ‘The Batman’ achieved both commercial and critical acclaim, grossing $770 million worldwide against a production budget of $185 million and earning an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘The Batman: Part 2’ is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

With Keoghan’s return confirmed, the central question for this Gotham chapter shifts from whether the Joker will appear to how fully the sequel will unleash him within Matt Reeves’ gritty, grounded vision of the city.
