Before Hollywood Stardom, ‘Dune’ Star Anya Taylor-Joy Discusses Childhood Bullying
Anya Taylor-Joy has opened up about a challenging period in her childhood, revealing that she faced bullying at school and often felt out of place. The actress shared her experiences during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, as reported in the show’s interview.
She expressed how deeply the experience impacted her, leading her to leave school at the age of 16. Nevertheless, she emphasized the significant role her parents played in helping her navigate those tough years.
During the interview, Anya reflected on the support she received from her parents while dealing with bullying related to her appearance. She noted that their guidance helped her remain resilient during a particularly difficult time in her life.
She explained, “I was very, very lucky with my parents because when I was bullied for my looks my mom always said you look at the inside of somebody you don’t look at class, you don’t look at anything like that.”
Anya continued to share the important message her mother instilled in her, emphasizing kindness and character over superficial traits. This advice resonated with her and aided her in coping with the hurtful remarks she encountered as a child.
“You look at the inside of somebody you don’t look at what they do for a job, it’s just do you like that person’s heart?” she stated, expressing gratitude to her mother for imparting this perspective.
Anya also shared that her school experience was quite challenging. After moving to London as a child from Argentina, she found the transition overwhelming, especially since she initially did not speak English and felt a sense of alienation. In previous interviews, she mentioned struggling to connect with other children and often feeling isolated.
She described the feeling of being caught between cultures and not being accepted by her peers. In earlier comments, she noted that this sense of not belonging made her school life even more difficult.
Due to these challenges, she ultimately decided to leave school at 16. Following that, she pursued acting, which quickly became her passion. Although this decision was tough for her family, she believed it was the right choice for her future.
She soon began to find opportunities in the entertainment industry, with one of her first major roles in the film ‘The Witch’, which helped kickstart her acting career.
Afterward, she appeared in several notable projects, including ‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘Emma’, and the acclaimed series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, which catapulted her to international fame.
Despite her current success, Anya made it clear in the interview that her early years were fraught with difficulty. She described school as a place where she often felt out of place and emotionally strained. Acting ultimately became a means for her to build confidence and find a sense of belonging.
Her reflections provided a personal glimpse into her journey from a challenging childhood to becoming one of the most recognized actresses in film and television today.
