Hollywood has been striving for consistent box office momentum, something that once seemed guaranteed. After facing unpredictable ticket sales and a series of costly flops, 2026 has emerged as one of the more promising periods for theatrical releases in recent memory.

The turnaround is particularly intriguing not just because of the size of the hits, but also the diversity among them. This year has seen a genuinely varied array of box office successes, ranging from major studio blockbusters to unexpected low-budget hits.

As reported by Variety, some of the year’s biggest box office successes include ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ which surpassed $1 billion globally on a $110 million budget, and ‘Michael,’ which also crossed the billion-dollar mark despite a $155 million budget. Other notable mentions are ‘Project Hail Mary,’ which earned $683.3 million against a $200 million budget, and ‘Obsession,’ which turned a modest $750,000 budget into an impressive $426 million worldwide.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ became the first film of the year to reach the billion-dollar milestone, achieving this with a relatively modest budget compared to its blockbuster counterparts. With a $110 million budget and a billion-dollar return, the film delivered the reliable franchise performance that Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo anticipated.

In contrast, ‘Michael’ tells a different billion-dollar story. Despite a tumultuous production filled with delays and drama, the Michael Jackson biopic turned into a genuine crowd-pleaser, ultimately surpassing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the highest-grossing musical biopic and outpacing ‘Oppenheimer’ as the largest film focused on a real-life figure.

This audience turnout came despite critical backlash regarding the film’s portrayal of Jackson’s more controversial history. Critics took issue with the film’s choice to conclude before Jackson’s later controversies, yet audiences were drawn in by the music rather than a more complex narrative.

‘Project Hail Mary’ represents a different kind of success. The thought-provoking astronaut epic starring Ryan Gosling defied expectations to become Amazon MGM’s first certified theatrical hit, demonstrating that original science fiction concepts can still attract a wide audience without relying on established franchises or comic book adaptations.

Then there’s ‘Obsession,’ perhaps the most surprising success story of the year. Directed by 26-year-old YouTuber turned filmmaker Curry Barker on a mere $750,000 budget, this supernatural horror film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before being acquired by Focus Features for around $15 million, a deal that has since proved immensely profitable.

What makes ‘Obsession’ particularly remarkable is its box office trajectory. The film actually increased its earnings in its second weekend, a rare occurrence for wide releases that garnered public praise from horror producer Jason Blum, who noted it as one of the few wide-release horror films to expand at that scale.

Collectively, these four films illustrate a thriving box office landscape that encompasses multiple genres. Family-friendly franchise films, star-driven biopics, mid-budget original science fiction, and micro-budget horror hits have all achieved genuine commercial success this year, rather than relying solely on one type of film to drive ticket sales.

This diversity is crucial for an industry that has been concerned about audiences only attending for the biggest spectacles. Success stories like ‘Obsession’ suggest that fresh voices and unconventional ideas can still resonate in a market often dominated by established intellectual properties.
