Brad Pitt Regrets His Role in ‘Troy’: I Made My Own Mistakes

Actor Brad Pitt has previously reflected on a film from his career that he looks back on with some regret.

The film in question is ‘Troy’, where Pitt portrayed Achilles in a grand historical production directed by Wolfgang Petersen. Although the movie was a significant studio release, it garnered mixed reviews from both critics and audiences at the time.

Pitt later shared that his experience on the project did not align with his creative expectations. He felt constrained during filming and noted that the production style limited his artistic freedom in both performance and camera work.

He expressed his frustration by stating, “It wasn’t painful, but I realised that the way that movie was being told was not how I wanted it to be. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about ‘Troy’? I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy.”

Pitt also compared this experience to his work with other directors, highlighting how different approaches have influenced his career choices. He mentioned that collaborating with filmmaker David Fincher shaped his expectations regarding creative control and storytelling style.

In his remarks, he added, “I’d become spoiled working with David Fincher. It’s no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. ‘Das Boot’ is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, ‘Troy’ became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, ‘Here’s the hero!’ There was no mystery.”

Following this experience, Pitt became more discerning with his roles, focusing on projects that offered him greater creative freedom and deeper storytelling. Over time, this shift enabled him to engage in films that received more critical acclaim and were more artist-driven.

This pattern is common among many actors who begin their careers in large studio films and later gravitate towards more selective projects. It doesn’t imply that the earlier film was a failure; rather, it indicates that his goals evolved over time. What are your thoughts on this? Should actors continue with big commercial films, or should they prioritize artistic roles as their careers advance? Share your opinions in the comments.
