Horror enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to this fall, as the genre’s fascination with weaponized nostalgia takes a chilling turn. A new teaser has dropped for a film that transforms the innocent, sugary realm of children’s television into something truly unsettling.

‘Buddy‘ first garnered attention at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, premiering in the Midnight section and quickly generating buzz among horror fans for its uniquely original concept. Directed by Casper Kelly, known for the viral 2014 Adult Swim short ‘Too Many Cooks’, the film similarly dismantles nostalgic television tropes.

This same creative vision drives ‘Buddy’, which revolves around a fictional children’s show titled ‘It’s Buddy!’. The show features a bright orange, humanoid unicorn with a purple heart on its chest. According to the official synopsis, a group of children joyfully sing and dance with Buddy until one child opts out, creating cracks in what initially appears to be a perfectly cheerful world.

The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Keegan-Michael Key, and Michael Shannon, with the new teaser offering viewers their first eerie look at the show’s transformation from wholesome to horrifying. Milioti portrays Grace, a suburban mother drawn into Buddy’s nightmare after a mysterious link emerges between the fictional show and her unresolved past, while Key voices the titular unicorn and Grace plays her husband, Ben.

In an interview with The Wrap during Sundance, Milioti shared that part of her motivation for joining ‘Buddy’ was the desire for a change after more emotionally intense roles in projects like ‘The Penguin’ and the seventh season of ‘Black Mirror’. She specifically sought something lighter, and felt that this project provided the perfect shift in tone.

Kelly has expressed how personal the theatrical release of the film is to him, noting in comments shared with Bloody Disgusting that he created the film to be experienced on the big screen and is grateful that audiences will finally have that opportunity. Saban Films co-presidents Jonathan Saba and Shanan Becker echoed this enthusiasm, praising Kelly as one of the most innovative and daring filmmakers today.

Initial critical reactions from Sundance have been largely positive, with the film currently holding an 84 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on early reviews. Some critics have pointed out that while the premise is inventive, it sometimes prioritizes style over substance, describing the film as colorful and charming but not always as fully developed as its ambitious concept suggests.

In addition to its main cast, the film features a supporting ensemble that further explores its unsettling children’s entertainment universe, including Patton Oswalt voicing an anthropomorphic backpack named Strappy and Clint Howard portraying a grizzled cowboy puppeteer alongside Shannon’s ventriloquist dummy character. This combination of practical effects-driven creature work and dark horror comedy has become one of the film’s most discussed aspects since its festival debut.

Roadside Attractions and Saban Films secured North American distribution rights to the film back in April, positioning it as one of the more distinctive genre offerings as the fall movie season approaches. With its mix of Barney-style children’s programming satire and full-blown horror, ‘Buddy’ is shaping up to be one of those rare festival favorites that manages to maintain its buzz leading into a wide theatrical release.
