Stephen King’s first novel has been adapted for the big screen multiple times, but never before as a complete television series. Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ premiered on Prime Video on October 7, marking the horror classic’s first TV adaptation, with all eight episodes released simultaneously.

The series features Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager whose life transforms after her father’s death forces her into public high school. Samantha Sloyan plays her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. Flanagan serves as the writer and showrunner, directing four episodes, while King acts as an executive producer.

The story continues, as Prime Video has officially renewed ‘Carrie’ for a second season, as reported by Deadline. This announcement came just two weeks after the first season’s release. King expressed excitement about the future, stating he and Flanagan “are excited about what comes next,” with Flanagan returning as showrunner.

The decision to renew was backed by impressive numbers. Prime Video revealed that the series reached No. 1 in over 105 countries following its debut and topped the platform’s weekly global TV series rankings, although specific viewership figures were not disclosed.

This renewal continues a trend for the platform, as every young adult series released on Prime Video in the past six months has been renewed, including ‘Elle’, ‘Off Campus’, ‘Every Year After’, and ‘Sterling Point’. ‘Carrie’ is the second series on Prime Video based on MGM/UA material to launch, following the ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel ‘Elle’, which has also received a renewal.

The renewal is particularly welcome since the first season diverged from the original book’s ending and concluded with a cliffhanger. Flanagan’s adaptation retains key elements from the original, such as Carrie’s powers, the prom, and her complex relationship with her mother, while introducing twists that suggest Carrie may not be as isolated as she thinks.

Prime Video indicates that the next chapter will explore Carrie beyond the defining events of her character, featuring new revelations, significant character arcs, and shocking twists. Flanagan has mentioned that extending the story beyond the familiar ending was part of his vision from the beginning.

This renewal brings Flanagan closer to his openly discussed goal of a three-season arc for the story, meaning he is now two-thirds of the way there if the plan remains intact. Season two does not yet have a release date.

The series was structured to stretch the story’s escalating cruelty across an entire season, focusing on the small daily choices that lead to a single devastating night, while leaving space to delve into what happens afterward.

The first season featured Howell, who was selected from nearly 1,500 auditionees, alongside Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard. Prime Video has not yet announced which cast members will return.

The reception has been largely positive, with praise for Flanagan’s modern interpretation, its themes, and the performances of Howell and Sloyan. However, some viewers expressed mixed feelings about the deviations from the novel. King has also publicly commended the adaptation.

This news comes during a busy period for Flanagan, who wrote the story for the DC Studios film ‘Clayface’, set to hit theaters this weekend, and is also developing ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’. His ongoing collaborations with King, including ‘Gerald’s Game’, ‘Doctor Sleep’, and ‘The Life of Chuck’, make ‘Carrie’ another significant chapter in a relationship that has shaped his career.

For horror enthusiasts, this renewal adds to an already packed season, featuring a hit streaming series, a major studio release, and more on the horizon.

While a release date is yet to be determined, fans can anticipate casting updates and story details as production begins. Given Flanagan’s history of meticulously planned arcs, viewers can expect a clear direction ahead.

For now, the message is clear: Carrie White’s story is far from over, and the series that brought it to the small screen has earned another opportunity.
