Marvel Studios has developed a comprehensive strategy for maintaining secrecy, and few projects have tested that system like ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ From decoy scripts to intricate set codenames, the studio has dedicated nearly two years to keeping its extensive, multiverse-spanning cast under wraps.

Chris Evans’ possible involvement became one of the most enduring rumors surrounding the film. The actor spent months publicly denying any connection to the project, even as leaks and set reports circulated about a mysterious 1960s-era house constructed for the production.

Now, Evans has confirmed what fans had long suspected, disclosing the elaborate measures Marvel took to safeguard his return as Steve Rogers. During a Q&A at Fan Expo Boston this past weekend, he revealed that his character was disguised under a decoy identity throughout the entire production.

“Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked,” Evans shared during the panel. “On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage. Even on set, they’d say, ‘Luke Cage is travelling.’ It was such a locked-down thing.”

This revelation aligns with earlier set reports that pointed to signage referencing ‘Luke Cage’s House’ near the period-accurate property built in Windsor Great Park. This detail had puzzled fans for months, as the character has no known ties to the plot of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ With Evans’ confirmation, it now seems the codename was merely a smokescreen related to Steve Rogers rather than an actual hint at Mike Colter’s Marvel character.

The house itself has sparked considerable speculation, especially given how ‘Avengers: Endgame’ concluded for Rogers. After returning the Infinity Stones, Steve chose to live a full life in the past alongside Peggy Carter before ultimately passing the shield to Sam Wilson. A period-appropriate house hidden from prying eyes fits neatly into that narrative, even if Marvel has yet to clarify exactly how Rogers fits into the new film.

Evans also took the opportunity to tease what audiences can expect from his character’s journey, hinting that directors Joe and Anthony Russo were not going easy on him this time. “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” Evans remarked. “Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up.”

He continued, hinting at a particularly challenging experience for the character in the upcoming film. “So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt, but this one was brutal, and a really good examination into his nature and his values.”

In addition to the codename reveal, Evans hinted at a renewed on-screen chemistry with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, a pairing that has anchored some of the MCU’s most cherished moments since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ When asked about filming together again, Evans seemed to catch himself before divulging too much.

“We really love working together so much, and I guess I can’t give too much away,” he said, before adding, “this is so tricky. I was about to start really talking. You almost got me.”

This comment has already ignited excitement among fans eager to see the two share the screen again after years of speculation about Evans’ Marvel future. Between the codename confirmation and the hints of a Bucky reunion, Fan Expo Boston delivered precisely the kind of drip-feed reveal Marvel has become known for.
