Chris Hemsworth Shows ‘Extraction 3’ Muay Thai Training in Thailand as Production Wraps Up
Action franchises thrive on the physical dedication of their stars. Viewers expect leading actors in high-octane thrillers to go beyond just standing in front of green screens, and few have embraced this expectation as much as Chris Hemsworth, the star behind Netflix’s black-ops mercenary.
In preparation for his third appearance as Tyler Rake, Hemsworth has dedicated much of 2026 to training. Back in July, he shared a workout video from a vacation in Costa Rica, showcasing a minimal equipment session that included resistance bands, kettlebells, and bodyweight exercises. Fans were impressed by his physique as he geared up for production.
Recently, a new training clip surfaced from Thailand, where Hemsworth is currently filming ‘Extraction 3’. In a 12-second video posted on his Instagram, he is seen training in Muay Thai shorts, throwing knee strikes into pads held by a trainer. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to train with a friend during the shoot.
This location holds significance as the first ‘Extraction,’ which premiered on Netflix on April 24, 2020, was filmed in Thailand and India. The climactic bridge battle was shot at the Lat Bua Khao Bridge in Ratchaburi, making the return to Thailand for the third film feel like a full-circle moment for the series.
Production details indicate that filming spans Sydney, the NSW South Coast, and Thailand. Although there were earlier rumors of a European segment, those plans appear to have shifted. Filming is expected to continue from early July through early October 2026, suggesting that this training clip comes as principal photography nears completion.
Director Sam Hargrave returns to helm the franchise, with Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler Rake. Idris Elba returns as the enigmatic operative Alcott, and Golshifteh Farahani is back as Nik Khan. The screenplay is penned by ‘Citadel’ showrunner David Weil, with Joe Russo also credited.
The narrative is anticipated to continue from the cliffhanger of ‘Extraction 2,’ where Tyler and a trusted ally were rescued from prison by Alcott. The franchise is based on the graphic novel ‘Ciudad’ by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, though specific plot details remain undisclosed.
When production kicked off, Hargrave expressed excitement about creating the third chapter in New South Wales, describing it as their most ambitious project yet. Hemsworth celebrated the filming start with a set photo featuring Elba and Hargrave. While there is no official release date yet, the film is expected to debut in 2027, likely in late summer or fall.

The delay in production was partly due to Hemsworth’s busy schedule, which included roles in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and the upcoming ‘Kockroach.’ This has made the wait longer for fans since the franchise’s second installment was released in 2023. At a Netflix Tudum event in Brazil shortly after that release, Hemsworth and Hargrave surprised the audience by revealing that a third film was already in the works.
The franchise has proven to be a significant success for Netflix. The first film was one of the platform’s biggest releases at the time, and both entries have received acclaim for their dedication to traditional action. Hemsworth’s Muay Thai training aligns perfectly with the physical, hand-to-hand combat style that defines Tyler Rake.
Hemsworth’s training approach is consistent with his history of performing as much of the action as possible. The Costa Rica workout emphasized endurance, while the Thailand clip showcases his focus on combat-specific training. Together, these elements suggest a performance that prioritizes stamina alongside strength.
For fans, these brief glimpses provide the best insights into what to expect from the film. They also indicate that Rake’s next mission will involve more than just gunfights and car chases, with fight choreography likely playing a significant role.
As filming appears to be entering its final weeks, the anticipation for official footage will intensify. Until then, behind-the-scenes clips like this one keep the excitement alive.
