Every superhero origin story has its rocky beginnings, and the actors behind the capes and blasters often have their own struggles. Long before Chris Pratt became a household name as Peter Quill, he was just another aspiring actor trying to break into an industry that kept closing doors on him.

Pratt has built one of the more unlikely superstar résumés in Hollywood, transitioning from a supporting role on ‘Parks and Recreation’ to leading one of Marvel’s most cherished franchises. That journey was paved with numerous rejections that almost convinced him superhero movies were simply not meant for him.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pratt shared how many Marvel roles he auditioned for and failed to secure before finally landing Star-Lord in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ When Kimmel inquired if he had tried out for Captain America, Pratt candidly confirmed he chased nearly every role Marvel had during that phase of his career.

Pratt recounted his challenging experience trying to break into the studio’s lineup of heroes, particularly recalling the Thor audition. He revealed that he wasn’t even auditioning for Thor himself but rather one of the character’s sidekicks, yet he still did not receive a callback.

According to Pratt, the feedback he received from that audition was notably blunt. He recalled that the casting director told him he had made a significant choice with his performance, a comment Pratt interpreted as a suggestion to tone down his acting considerably.

The rejections extended beyond just those two roles. Pratt explained that he pursued nearly every Marvel project that called for someone with his physicality, submitting tapes and attending auditions only to be turned away repeatedly.

Sometimes, the answer came before he even had the chance to audition in person, with casting teams informing him they did not need to see him at all. Other times, he would arrive for the audition, only to be told afterward that it would be the last time they wanted to see him for anything.

This pattern gradually chipped away at his confidence, leading Pratt to believe he simply lacked the star quality Marvel sought in its heroes. He reached a point where he thought his chances of ever landing a role in the franchise were over.

Of course, everything changed when Pratt ultimately won the role of Peter Quill in 2014’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ a part that transformed him into one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars. Kimmel pointed out the irony, noting that Pratt clearly possessed the qualities casting directors claimed he lacked.

Pratt’s candidness about the audition process has resonated with fans and aspiring actors alike, providing a rare insight into how unpredictable and demoralizing auditions can be, even for those who eventually lead billion-dollar franchises. His journey to becoming Star-Lord exemplifies how persistence can pay off in an industry often defined by rejection.

The role ultimately reshaped his career trajectory, leading him through three ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films, multiple Avengers appearances, and a long list of other blockbuster credits. What Marvel role do you think would have suited Chris Pratt if one of those early auditions had actually worked out? Let us know in the comments.
