Christopher Nolan Fans Go to Great Lengths for ‘The Odyssey’ 70mm IMAX Experience
Christopher Nolan has always maintained that movies should be experienced on the largest screens possible, and fans are echoing that sentiment. With ‘The Odyssey’ emerging as one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year, moviegoers are traveling across states, purchasing tickets months in advance, and making significant plans just to catch the film in 70mm IMAX.
The enthusiasm has reached such heights that many fans are treating the theatrical experience like a special event rather than a typical movie outing. Nolan filmed the entire movie with IMAX cameras, marking it as the first feature entirely shot in that format. Due to the limited number of theaters equipped to showcase the film in true 70mm IMAX, fans are going to great lengths to find those select locations.
One such fan is Amber Connaghan, a 29-year-old technology editor residing in the California desert. As reported by Variety, Connaghan secured her ticket over a year before the release and is gearing up for a three-hour drive to the nearest theater screening ‘The Odyssey’ in IMAX 70mm.
She even humorously noted that the movie has impacted her personal life. “One of my friends got pregnant last year, and she’s like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to have your second child,’” Connaghan recounted. “I was like, ‘No, I have to wait a few months. Otherwise, it’s going to be too close to ‘The Odyssey.’”
Connaghan is certainly not alone. Fans worldwide are racing to secure their spots for the rare IMAX 70mm screenings, with many locations selling out rapidly after tickets were released. Since numerous IMAX theaters lack the necessary equipment for 70mm film, some viewers are traveling significant distances or booking unconventional showtimes just to experience Nolan’s latest film in its intended format.
Hogan Shay, a 27-year-old software advisor from Dallas, told Variety that he intends to watch the movie twice in IMAX 70mm within a fortnight. “This is the biggest movie of the year from the biggest director of our lifetime,” Shay stated. “We grew up with Nolan’s work. He’s a household name for my generation like Spielberg or Scorsese were for my parents.”
Some fans are taking their dedication even further. Tim McHugh, a 33-year-old healthcare consultant from Pittsburgh, is flying to Los Angeles to see the film at Universal CityWalk’s IMAX 70mm theater. McHugh expressed that experiencing a film in this format has been a personal aspiration for years after learning more about the large-format screening process.
“So much of my after-school life was spent lacing projectors that I fell in love with movies,” McHugh shared. “You feel connected to the medium when you’re putting your hands on film like that.”
The rush for tickets has also led to some chaotic situations. Variety reported that when additional tickets were released, many fans faced website crashes and lengthy waits. Conrad Rothbaum, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, described the experience as stressful while trying to secure seats with friends.
“It was harrowing,” Rothbaum recounted. “I was on a text chain with friends, and we were all trying to get tickets at the same time.”
For devoted Nolan fans, the anticipation is about more than just watching a new film. Many view ‘The Odyssey’ as yet another example of the director’s commitment to preserving the traditional theater experience in an evolving industry. From ‘The Dark Knight’ to ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan has consistently encouraged audiences to enjoy his films on premium screens.
Some fans are even planning multiple viewings. Simon James, a New York attorney, purchased 18 IMAX 70mm tickets for the film’s initial weeks of release at AMC Lincoln Square.
“Chris Nolan is my favorite director, and I am a big appreciator of his films,” James told Variety. “I really believe him when he says that the best way to see a Chris Nolan film is in an IMAX theater.”
With ‘The Odyssey’ set to hit theaters, the immense effort from fans demonstrates that Nolan has crafted something beyond a mere movie release. For many viewers, experiencing the film in IMAX 70mm has become an integral part of the overall experience.
