Christopher Nolan Reveals When His Next Movie After ‘The Odyssey’ Will Arrive
Christopher Nolan has successfully brought one of his most ambitious projects to life with ‘The Odyssey’. However, fans eager for another film may need to exercise patience. The director has indicated that audiences shouldn’t expect his next movie anytime soon.
In a recent interview with TODAY while promoting ‘The Odyssey’, Nolan shared that his upcoming film is still quite a distance away. When questioned about a potential three-year wait, similar to the interval between ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘The Odyssey’, he simply responded, “Oh, at least.”
This is the clearest timeline Nolan has provided, suggesting that his next project may not be released until 2029 or later.
Nolan explained that creating ‘The Odyssey’ was one of the most challenging experiences of his career. Although he had dreamed of adapting Homer’s epic poem for nearly two decades, the actual process proved to be a significant undertaking.
Speaking to TODAY, he mentioned that he finally reached a stage in his career where a film of this magnitude could become a reality. “Now, I can get something made that I couldn’t otherwise get made. For me to take on Greek mythology on a big modern cinematic canvas is something that hasn’t been done.”
He believes the enduring popularity of the story stems from its blend of various genres into one epic adventure. “There’s so much in it for everybody. It’s a love story. It’s a coming-of-age story. It’s a story about war and homecoming. And I think that’s the eternal appeal of ‘The Odyssey.’”

While the final film is visually stunning, Nolan admitted that the production was as demanding as the story itself.
He recalled an early discussion with star Matt Damon before filming commenced, warning him about the tough nature of the shoot. Nolan believes Damon didn’t fully grasp the extent of the challenge until they were deep into production.
“I have a feeling he didn’t really understand until we got on the boat,” Nolan remarked. “It’s not until you get there and you start, you know, hiking up a goat’s path to cyclops’ cave.”
Nolan noted that was the moment Damon realized the production would test everyone’s limits.
The Oscar-winning director acknowledged that the shoot was physically taxing for both him and the crew.
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s ‘The Odyssey,’ of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of ‘The Odyssey’ if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
Part of this challenge stemmed from Nolan’s dedication to making cinematic history. ‘The Odyssey’ is the first Hollywood feature filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, a dream he has harbored for years.
He explained that utilizing this format was crucial because he wanted viewers to feel as though they were journeying alongside Odysseus throughout the film.
“For ‘The Odyssey,’ I went to IMAX and I said, ‘Look, if ever we are going to fulfill this dream of shooting the entire movie that way, this is the one. This is ‘The Odyssey.’”
Nolan added that this technology finally enabled him to achieve a goal he has pursued throughout his career.
Now that ‘The Odyssey’ has premiered in theaters, Nolan hopes audiences enjoy the adventure. However, while fans celebrate his latest epic, they should brace themselves for a lengthy wait before his next film is released. If Nolan’s estimate holds true, moviegoers may not see another project from him for at least three more years.
