Home video releases for Christopher Nolan films often attract extra attention, primarily due to the director’s meticulous approach to theatrical presentation. His commitment to film photography and premium formats means that every technical aspect of his UHD releases ignites genuine discussions among cinephiles.

The focus has now turned to his latest work. ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s mythological drama that made history as the first feature entirely shot with IMAX film cameras, is set to release on home video this November. Early specifications have already ignited conversations about how well the disc will capture its theatrical experience.

Reporting from FlatpanelsHD reveals that the upcoming 4K UHD release will feature a 1.78:1 aspect ratio instead of the full 1.43:1 format used in IMAX 70mm theatrical showings. This means that rather than replicating the original taller frame, the home release will align more closely with the 1.90:1 ratio typically seen in standard IMAX theaters, effectively offering what is termed an “IMAX Enhanced” experience for home viewing.

This distinction is significant, considering the varied theatrical presentations of the film. While IMAX 70mm locations could showcase the complete 1.43:1 frame, other venues displayed the film in formats ranging from 1.90:1 to 2.39:1, meaning that even those who viewed ‘The Odyssey’ in theaters did not all experience the same framing.

The reasoning behind this choice is rooted in basic television geometry. No consumer television currently matches the full-frame IMAX’s 1.43:1 aspect ratio, so presenting the film in that format at home would necessitate significant black bars on either side of the screen, something studios typically aim to avoid in standard home releases.

A preliminary listing on Blu-ray.com indicates that the release will come as a three-disc package featuring native 4K video, HDR10, and a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, with a runtime of approximately 172 minutes. Notably missing from this listing are Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X options, although Universal has yet to finalize the official specifications for the release.

This isn’t the first time Nolan and Universal have faced this challenge. His 2023 film ‘Oppenheimer,’ which utilized both IMAX and standard 65mm photography, ultimately adopted a variable aspect ratio approach for its 4K release, shifting between 2.20:1 and 1.78:1 depending on the scene. Since ‘The Odyssey’ was filmed entirely on IMAX film, it remains uncertain whether its home release will maintain a consistent 1.78:1 ratio or vary by sequence.

The 4K UHD and digital release is currently scheduled for November 17, arriving exactly four months after the film’s theatrical debut on July 17. Both formats are expected to launch simultaneously, following what has been described as an unusually long exclusive theatrical window by current industry standards, reflecting Nolan’s well-known preference for cinema exhibition.

Given the film’s impressive box office performance, having already grossed over a billion dollars globally and becoming both Nolan’s highest-grossing film and the top-performing IMAX release ever, this home video release carries more significance than a typical studio catalog title. For fans eager to experience the film’s stunning visuals at home, the coming months should provide further insights into how faithfully that IMAX experience translates to the small screen.
