Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is still weeks away from its theatrical release, yet the highly anticipated epic is already making waves at the box office.

The upcoming fantasy action film has reportedly garnered around $3.5 million in domestic preview ticket sales, indicating strong early interest from moviegoers. According to reports from Movie Mint, this early demand has led to increased opening weekend predictions, with estimates suggesting the film could debut between $70 million and $90 million in North America.

The excitement extends beyond the United States. In the United Kingdom, ‘The Odyssey’ set a record at London’s renowned BFI IMAX, selling 28,000 tickets within just 24 hours and generating around $1 million, breaking the venue’s previous record.

The former record at BFI IMAX was held by ‘Dune: Part Two’, which earned approximately half of that amount on its first day of sales. The impressive numbers demonstrate that audiences are eager to experience Nolan’s latest project on the largest screens available.

‘The Odyssey’ is poised to be one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026. Directed and written by Christopher Nolan, the film adapts Homer’s legendary Greek epic, following Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War.

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, who must navigate mythical threats and daunting challenges while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, and his son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland.

The film boasts an impressive cast that includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is producing the project alongside his wife Emma Thomas through their production company, Syncopy.

Known for crafting grand cinematic experiences, Nolan is taking an ambitious approach with ‘The Odyssey’. The filmmaker has reportedly shot the entire movie using IMAX 70 mm film cameras, marking the first time he has utilized this format from start to finish in his career.

The production reportedly had a budget of around $250 million, making it one of the most expensive films Nolan has ever created. The director has emphasized practical filmmaking, real locations, and large-scale visuals to bring the ancient narrative to life.

The film’s journey to theaters has already been unique. Opening weekend IMAX 70 mm tickets were released a full year prior to the movie’s premiere, with many screenings selling out quickly. Several ticket websites experienced significant traffic as fans rushed to secure their seats.

Industry analysts have noted the early demand. Variety has suggested that ‘The Odyssey’ could become one of the biggest films of 2026, while other analysts believe it has the potential to be Nolan’s highest box office success.

The film will face significant challenges due to its reported R rating and substantial budget, but early ticket sales indicate that audiences are ready for another large-scale Nolan experience.

With record-breaking presales, a stellar cast, and one of Hollywood’s most esteemed directors at the helm, ‘The Odyssey’ is shaping up to be one of the defining theatrical events of 2026.

The film is set to hit theaters on July 17 from Universal Pictures.
