Christopher Nolan has established himself as a director capable of drawing large audiences to theaters with original, non-franchise films. His $250 million adaptation of Homer’s epic poem was always a risky venture, merging ancient mythology with a star-studded cast instead of relying on an established franchise.

That risk has paid off in unexpected ways since ‘The Odyssey’ premiered on July 17, 2026. Months later, the film continues to break records, achieving milestones that no other Universal film has ever reached.

‘The Odyssey’ has officially become the first Universal film to surpass $1.7 billion at the global box office, as reported by Kalshi Film. Additionally, it has reached $1.1 billion internationally, setting another all-time record for the studio.

Prior to ‘The Odyssey,’ Universal’s highest-grossing film was ‘Jurassic World,’ which held the record since 2015 with a global total of approximately $1.677 billion. The fact that an original mythological epic could eclipse a well-known dinosaur franchise highlights the deep connection Nolan’s film has made with audiences around the world.

The film reportedly surpassed ‘Jurassic World’ during its ninth weekend in theaters, showcasing an unusually long run for a modern blockbuster, where most films tend to earn the bulk of their revenue during opening weekend. This sustained success has continued well beyond the two-month mark, pushing the total even higher in the weeks that followed.

The $1.1 billion international figure is particularly noteworthy, as original, non-franchise films seldom achieve such sustained overseas success in today’s box office environment. ‘The Odyssey’ has become the first non-sequel, non-remake film to cross $1 billion internationally since ‘Avatar’ in 2010, emphasizing the rarity of this level of global appeal for original narratives.

Filming took place across six countries, including Greece, Morocco, Iceland, and the Italian island of Favignana, to authentically portray the ancient world described by Homer. This global production approach likely contributed to the film’s strong international interest, as audiences appreciated seeing their regions represented on screen.

In addition to setting studio records, ‘The Odyssey’ has become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing all previous works including ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ It marks his first film to cross the $1 billion mark since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ over a decade ago and has also claimed the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Samantha Morton as Circe, and Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. This impressive lineup, combined with Nolan’s directorial prowess, undoubtedly contributed to the film’s strong ticket sales worldwide.

‘The Odyssey’ has also become the biggest IMAX release of all time, grossing approximately $289 million in that format alone, showcasing how many viewers opted for the premium large-format experience to enjoy Nolan’s stunning visuals. The film is now the second-highest-grossing release of 2026 and has secured a place among the all-time top fifteen highest-grossing films, a remarkable achievement for a story that predates cinema by about three millennia.

Critical reception has mirrored its commercial success, with reviewers praising Nolan’s direction, the performances of the ensemble cast, and the film’s grand set pieces, despite some criticism regarding its deviations from Homer’s original narrative.

NBCUniversal Entertainment Chairman Donna Langley expressed her admiration for the film, stating, “What Chris and Emma have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history.” Such accolades from studio leadership highlight the significance of this achievement, especially as it breaks a record that stood for over a decade.

With the film continuing to perform strongly in theaters, there remains potential for these numbers to grow even further before ‘The Odyssey’ concludes its theatrical run. For a passion project based on a 3,000-year-old story rather than an existing franchise, this level of endurance is a remarkable feat in today’s box office landscape.
