Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Home Release Date Revealed With Exclusive Features
For several months, the only way to experience Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ was by purchasing a ticket and immersing yourself in a theater for nearly three hours. Designed for the big screen, the film was shot entirely with IMAX cameras and saw its 70mm showings sell out a year in advance. Such an event cinema experience is challenging to replicate on a home television, but fans now have a new way to enjoy it.
Universal has announced that the film is set to arrive on home screens, accompanied by a new 29-second teaser showcasing figures descending a rope against a vibrant red sail, providing a glimpse of the visual spectacle audiences can look forward to revisiting. The home release will feature exclusive special features, marking the conclusion of a record-breaking theatrical run that began in July.
The home release is scheduled for November 17, when ‘The Odyssey’ will be available for rent or purchase on digital platforms like Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, along with a DVD, will also be released on the same day, exactly four months after the film debuted in theaters on July 17.
This timeline mirrors that of ‘Oppenheimer’, which spent 123 days in theaters before transitioning to premium video on demand and physical media in November 2023. Both films enjoyed unusually long theatrical runs compared to most major studio releases. For fans of physical media, it’s noteworthy that the 4K disc will be released simultaneously with the digital version.
According to listings, the DVD will be a 2-disc set, while the 4K edition will come with 3 discs. Details regarding the special features, behind-the-scenes content, and any director’s commentary had not been disclosed at the time of the announcement. However, the new teaser does confirm the presence of exclusive extras, although their specifics remain a mystery for now.
The film’s box office numbers are staggering. ‘The Odyssey’ opened to $264.1 million globally, with $124.5 million from 3,919 domestic theaters and $139.6 million from 73 international markets. This made it the largest global opening of Nolan’s career, surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘The Dark Knight’, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.
It has since surpassed $1.35 billion worldwide, breaking the previous record for an R-rated film set by ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at $1.338 billion, and now stands second only to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ among this year’s top hits. In comparison, ‘Oppenheimer’ ultimately grossed $975 million. Audiences rated the film an A CinemaScore, and critics have responded positively, giving it a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film adapts Homer’s epic poem, following Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Throughout his adventure, he encounters various creatures and temptations, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and Calypso. Nolan wrote the screenplay and produced the film alongside his wife, Emma Thomas.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope and Tom Holland as their son, Telemachus. Zendaya plays Athena, Robert Pattinson takes on the role of the suitor Antinous, and Charlize Theron plays Calypso. The ensemble cast also features Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page.

IMAX played a crucial role in the film’s success, contributing significantly to ticket sales. Only 41 IMAX locations were able to showcase the film in 70mm, generating $6.3 million during the opening weekend. While any home version will inevitably lose some of that grand scale, the 4K disc offers the closest experience for viewers seeking maximum fidelity.
For those who missed the theatrical release, this home version provides an opportunity to discover what all the excitement was about. For those who experienced it on a massive screen, the special features may offer insights into how Nolan and his team created the film’s mythic set pieces. Additionally, an official screenplay and a making-of hardcover book are available, giving eager fans a chance to delve deeper into the production while they wait.
The release coincides with the ramp-up of awards season. Observers anticipate the film will make a significant impact at the Oscars, and a home version will allow voters and audiences an easy way to catch up. This could extend the film’s cultural influence well beyond its theatrical run.
As with all of Nolan’s films, discussions about the best way to experience ‘The Odyssey’ are likely to persist. For now, the answer is straightforward: soon, there will be one more option.
