Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Joins Exclusive Box Office Club
Rated-R films often struggle at the box office due to their restrictive rating, which limits their audience reach. This inherent challenge has historically prevented most R-rated releases from achieving the kind of box office success typically seen by family-friendly films, making any exceptions to this trend particularly significant.
This summer has dramatically changed that narrative, largely due to one filmmaker’s bold investment in a mature, expansive epic that many believed would falter due to its rating. What has transpired since has turned into one of the most remarkable box office stories of the year.
‘The Odyssey’ has become only the second R-rated film ever to surpass $400 million at the domestic box office, according to tracking data from its third weekend in theaters. The Christopher Nolan-directed epic reached this milestone on Monday, joining a very select group of R-rated films that have achieved this level of success domestically.
The film’s performance during its third weekend was impressive in its own right. ‘The Odyssey’ brought in $51.1 million over its third three-day weekend, marking the second-largest third weekend ever for an R-rated film in North America, and the highest third weekend of Christopher Nolan’s career, surpassing the previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight’ at $42.7 million.
This milestone performance on Monday also established a new personal best for the director. Reports indicate that the film achieved the largest third Monday ever for an R-rated release, as well as the biggest third Monday of Nolan’s career, highlighting the film’s exceptional holdover performance even weeks after its debut.

‘The Odyssey’ has now outperformed the domestic lifetime totals of both ‘Deadpool,’ which grossed $363.1 million, and ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ which earned $370.8 million, positioning it as the second-highest-grossing R-rated film ever at the North American box office, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
The film’s audience reception has been as strong as its box office performance. ‘The Odyssey’ received an “A” CinemaScore, a notably high grade for a nearly three-hour, R-rated epic based on Homer’s ancient poem, reflecting the enthusiastic word-of-mouth that has contributed to the film’s remarkably small weekend-to-weekend declines throughout its run.
Globally, the film has already surpassed $900 million, making it Christopher Nolan’s fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, having already outpaced both ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Inception.’ With significant markets like China, Japan, and Korea still to come, the film’s journey toward the $1 billion mark seems almost certain.
Starring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, alongside a remarkable ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o, ‘The Odyssey’ was filmed entirely using IMAX film cameras, a technical feat that has contributed to its dominance in premium large-format screens throughout its theatrical run. With records continuing to be broken well into its third weekend, Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s epic poem shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
