Dick Wolf’s latest spinoff is set to return with an expanded episode order and a prime fall slot. ‘CIA’ was renewed just five episodes into its initial run and is coming back this fall as part of the network’s revamped lineup. Following a strong debut, the show now enjoys the kind of full runway that most freshman dramas only dream of.

For those curious about the future of the ‘FBI’ franchise, the second season of ‘CIA’ appears to be the answer. The unique dynamic between a rule-abiding federal agent and a roguish spy is back, and the storyline carries significant emotional weight from the season finale. Here’s everything we know about the show’s return.

The new season is set to premiere on Monday, October 5, at 9 PM ET/PT on CBS. Originally debuting in midseason, the show is now moving to the fall lineup and will continue airing after ‘FBI,’ which is entering its ninth season.

This season is planned to consist of 22 episodes airing weekly, a significant increase from the 12 episodes of the first season. This extended run allows the writers more space to develop personal storylines.

Episodes will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+. The network had solid reasons for extending the order, as the series premiere attracted 8.4 million multiplatform viewers within a week, leading CBS to renew the show on March 23.

The main cast remains unchanged. Tom Ellis stars as CIA agent Colin Glass, while Nick Gehlfuss portrays FBI Special Agent Bill Goodman. Necar Zadegan returns as Deputy Chief of Station Nikki Reynard, and Natalee Linez plays analyst Gina Gosian.

One of the biggest questions is whether Colin’s former partner will return. Fans are hopeful that Angela Sarafyan will reprise her role as Toni Napier, although her appearance has not been confirmed. Showrunner Mike Weiss has hinted at the direction her storyline may take.

Familiar faces will also cross over from the parent series. John Boyd will reprise his role as fast-talking Special Agent Stuart Scola in the premiere, joining the team on a shocking operation. Guest stars in the premiere include Charles Baker as Keith Truman and Brian Letscher as Gary Martin.

The premiere episode, titled “The Deep,” opens with a body count. When a known cartel fixer arrives in New York, the team tracks him down and discovers the body of a DEA agent, revealing that the case is more complex than it initially appears. The episode is penned by Mike Weiss and directed by Ken Girotti.

However, the case is only part of the story. Bill uncovers a shocking truth upon returning to work after his father’s death, prompting the team to rely on Scola for assistance. This sets up a significant emotional arc for the season.

In an interview with Give Me My Remote, Weiss shared that the show will explore a major mystery surrounding Bill’s father, a respected army veteran whose life is more complicated than Bill ever knew.

Colin also faces his own challenges. The first season revealed that his former partner Toni is alive but was involved in corrupt activities, and she will attempt to reconcile with him. Given Colin’s emotional turmoil over her supposed death, forgiveness will not come easily.

CBS has already teased what’s ahead. An official trailer was released ahead of the October return during CBS Premiere Week, hinting at new dangers, twists, and covert actions for Colin and Bill. The footage emphasizes the tension at the heart of the show, which revolves around two agencies with differing rulebooks working together.

The trailer also highlights the franchise synergy. Boyd’s Scola appears in the ‘CIA’ premiere, while Necar Zadegan’s Nikki Reynard will feature in the ‘FBI’ season nine premiere titled “Rendition.” This two-way crossover on opening night is a clever way to draw loyal ‘FBI’ viewers into the spinoff.

The premise remains unchanged. Bill is a by-the-book agent assigned to a covert task force alongside Colin, where they tackle international plots, terrorist cells, and geopolitical secrets. The real question is whether Bill’s family mystery will finally push him to bend the rules, as Colin often does. Will the straight-laced agent allow himself to break bad this season?
