‘House of the Dragon’ Star Ewan Mitchell Linked to Villain Role in Denis Villeneuve’s Bond Film
Every October 5, fans celebrate James Bond Day, honoring the release of 1962’s ‘Dr. No.’ This year, many 007 enthusiasts were hoping for the first official announcement regarding the next James Bond, following months of speculation.
However, a new rumor has surfaced regarding the other half of the equation. The search for the next Bond is just one part of the puzzle, as any great spy film also requires a formidable villain.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in May that the search for the next 007 is in progress, stating they would refrain from commenting on specific details during the casting process but would share updates when appropriate. Despite this, the rumor mill continues to churn, with the latest report focusing on a familiar face from ‘House of the Dragon.’
According to The Sun, as reported by NME, Ewan Mitchell is being considered for a villain role in the upcoming Bond film. Mitchell, known for his portrayal of Prince Aemond Targaryen on ‘House of the Dragon,’ has not yet commented on this speculation.
The tabloid’s source indicated that producers are looking for an emerging talent rather than a well-established star, seeking someone with a distinctive appearance. The source described Mitchell as the complete package, noting that his age aligns with a reboot aiming for a younger cast.
It’s important to emphasize that none of this information is confirmed. Reports have also mentioned that no actors have officially been cast in any significant roles, so consider the Mitchell rumor as industry chatter for the time being.
Mitchell, an English actor born in Derby in 1997, began his career in 2015. He gained recognition in ‘The Last Kingdom,’ where he portrayed Osferth from the second to the fifth series, and later appeared in the BBC World War II drama ‘World on Fire.’
He joined ‘House of the Dragon’ as the adult Aemond Targaryen in the first season, succeeding Leo Ashton, who played the younger version. The one-eyed prince has emerged as one of the show’s most formidable characters, with Mitchell describing him as an escalating threat in the third season, likening his storyline to that of Travis Bickle from ‘Taxi Driver.’
This reputation for portraying ruthless and unsettling characters is precisely what a Bond villain requires. A younger actor with a striking presence and a rising profile would also align with the vision of establishing a fresh Bond era.
Denis Villeneuve was confirmed as the director in June 2025, with Steven Knight writing the script and Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing. Villeneuve expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating he is a lifelong Bond fan who grew up watching the films, starting with ‘Dr. No.’
This film marks the first 007 adventure under Amazon MGM, expected to premiere in 2028 after Villeneuve completes his commitments to ‘Dune.’ Deadline has reported that the director is seeking an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s to portray Bond himself.
Names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, and Jack Lowden have been frequently mentioned for the lead role, while Variety previously reported that Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, and Harris Dickinson were at the top of Amazon’s wish list. However, nothing has been officially confirmed, and Taylor-Johnson is said to have ruled himself out.
The tradition of Bond villains is rich, ranging from the scheming masterminds of the early films to the more psychologically complex antagonists of the Daniel Craig era. Whoever takes on this role will have significant expectations, and their selection will reflect the tone Villeneuve aims to establish.
A casting choice like Mitchell’s would suggest a leaner, younger, and more intense direction, consistent with the director’s reputation for atmospheric and serious filmmaking. It would also continue the long-standing tradition of integrating rising talent from prestigious television into blockbuster franchises.
For now, fans will have to wait for Amazon to make its next move. Until then, every Bond rumor should be approached with caution, even if this one is intriguing to consider.
