Anthony Mackie Affirms Sam Wilson Remains Captain America Despite Chris Evans’ Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
The confirmation of Chris Evans’ return to the MCU has sparked significant discussion around ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ After Steve Rogers appeared to conclude his journey in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ fans are eager to understand how his comeback will coexist with Sam Wilson, who currently wields the shield.
The initial teaser, released months ago, intensified the speculation. It depicted Rogers arriving at a farmhouse on a motorcycle, putting away his Captain America suit, and cradling a newborn, followed by a title card stating, “Steve Rogers will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’” Marvel’s choice to refer to him as Steve rather than Captain America led many to believe that Evans would not simply reclaim the title.
Now, Anthony Mackie, the current bearer of the star-spangled costume, has shared his thoughts on Evans’ role in the film. In an interview with Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, Mackie confirmed Evans’ return but emphasized, “I’m still Captain America.” He referenced the comics where both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have fought alongside each other, both holding the Captain America name.
Mackie explained that Rogers’ return is due to the heroes facing a formidable adversary in the film, indicating that this development is not intended to overshadow Sam but rather to enhance their collective strength.
These comments were made during a discussion about Mackie’s upcoming Broadway return to play Macbeth, marking his first stage appearance in 16 years. He mentioned that the idea emerged while filming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in London while conversing about theater with his friend and mentor Wendell Pierce.
Mackie’s recent remarks follow an earlier clarification he made after Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July. He told Variety that Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, not as Captain America, and hinted that Rogers might take on the Nomad identity from the comics.
Together, these interviews present a clear narrative: Steve Rogers is back, but the film continues to position Sam as the primary Captain America, while the specifics of Steve’s role remain under wraps.
This ambiguity appears intentional, as Marvel has kept details secret. A later trailer showed Rogers reuniting with Thor, providing fans with another glimpse without clarifying his purpose.

Evans had previously insisted he was done with the role, expressing his contentment with retirement in an early interview with Esquire last year, where he denied any return rumors.
At CinemaCon this year, he mentioned he would only return for a compelling reason, which he believes ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ provides. The Russo brothers have also stated they couldn’t envision the story without his character, with Anthony Russo telling Empire that they can’t see the narrative without his central role.
Mackie has expressed excitement about the reunion. At Comic-Con Málaga on October 3, he described the atmosphere when he, Evans, and Sebastian Stan are together as a powwow, filled with jokes and discussions before returning to work.
The film promises to be monumental, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and uniting the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, Wakanda, and the X-Men. The Russo brothers, who directed the last two Avengers films, are back at the helm, with the film set to hit theaters on December 18.
For Sam Wilson, the stakes are high. Since he took up the shield at the end of ‘Endgame,’ he has embraced the mantle through ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ leading some fans to worry that Steve’s return could overshadow him.
Mackie’s comments seem aimed at alleviating those concerns. Regardless of what Steve does in the movie, Sam is not relinquishing the title.
