‘Constantine 2’ Remains in Development at DC Studios for Keanu Reeves Fans
Some movie sequels take years to materialize, while others linger in development for nearly two decades, sustained by fan enthusiasm and occasional updates. ‘Constantine 2’ firmly falls into the latter category, remaining one of the most discussed potential projects in comic book cinema.
The original film has aged remarkably well, contrary to its initial reception. When ‘Constantine’ debuted in 2005, it garnered mixed reviews and a box office performance that didn’t quite align with its ambitions. However, over the years, it has cultivated a loyal fanbase through home video releases, streaming platforms, and cable reruns.
Recently, there’s been a new indication that the sequel is still on the table. A fresh Deadline report confirms that ‘Constantine 2’ is still in development at DC Studios. Although the project lacks a release date and hasn’t been greenlit for production, the latest updates suggest that Keanu Reeves may still reprise his role as John Constantine.
Directed by Francis Lawrence in his feature debut, the 2005 film grossed approximately $230 million worldwide against a budget of around $100 million. While this was a decent return, critics were divided, and comic book fans expressed concerns over the film’s divergence from the source material. Over time, however, its dark portrayal of angels, demons, and a chain-smoking occult detective has garnered a dedicated audience.
Lawrence has expressed his satisfaction with the film’s cult status. During a 15th-anniversary panel, he mentioned that a sequel should embrace a truly dark and frightening narrative. Producer Akiva Goldsman added that the team has long envisioned a hard-R follow-up.
The modern push for ‘Constantine 2’ began in September 2022, when Deadline first reported that Reeves would return, with Lawrence back in the director’s chair. Goldsman was set to write the screenplay and produce through his Weed Road Pictures banner, alongside J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot. Fans were excited, but that enthusiasm was short-lived.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled the initial slate for the new DC Universe, ‘Constantine 2’ was notably absent, leading to cancellation rumors. Warner Bros. reassured Entertainment Weekly that the sequel was still progressing, and Reeves mentioned he had discussed it with Gunn. Lawrence later indicated that the Hollywood strikes had caused delays.
In early 2025, Reeves told Inverse that he and Lawrence had finally developed a story and pitched it to DC Studios, which approved the script’s development. He noted that the film would take place in the same universe as the original, with a more tortured version of Constantine. This was the most significant indication of progress in years.
The film is reportedly being treated as an Elseworlds project, separate from the main DCU continuity and alongside titles like ‘The Batman’ and ‘Joker’. An early draft was reportedly completed in fall 2024, with development continuing into 2025 after DC approved the story. However, when Gunn appeared on the ‘BobaTalks’ podcast in October 2025, he mentioned that he had discussed the movie with Reeves intermittently but had yet to read a script.

The primary challenges are practical. There is no confirmed release date, no official trailer, and the project remains at the script stage. Reports indicate that the screenplay has undergone multiple revisions, which Reeves has acknowledged publicly.
The film’s R-rated aspirations could present additional challenges. A darker, more violent approach is precisely what Lawrence and Goldsman have expressed a desire for, but it complicates budgeting and marketing. Nevertheless, superhero cinema has evolved significantly since 2005, and Reeves’ popularity has only grown.
For many fans, Reeves is synonymous with John Constantine. He has advocated for a return to the role for years, expressing his love for the character and his collaboration with Lawrence. This passion has kept hope alive, even during the quietest periods.
Additionally, the character has persisted in other media. The occult detective has appeared in comics and television, yet nothing has matched the cult appeal of the 2005 film. The prospect of seeing an older, wearier Reeves return to the role is undeniably enticing.
Until a script is finalized and a studio officially greenlights production, ‘Constantine 2’ will remain a tale of patience. However, as long as DC Studios continues its development, fans have reason to believe that the sequel may finally come to fruition.
