The ‘Friday the 13th‘ franchise has been mired in legal disputes for years, effectively keeping Jason Voorhees submerged at the bottom of Crystal Lake since the 2009 Platinum Dunes remake. However, this dry spell is finally ending, and fans are about to witness something unprecedented: Jason as a child.

This new chapter is brought to life by ‘Crystal Lake,’ an eight-episode prequel series from A24 and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, set to debut on Peacock this October. Instead of diving straight into slasher territory, the series explores the origins of Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, as she grapples with the aftermath of her son’s tragic drowning at the campground that would later gain infamy.

Recently released character posters have provided fans with their first glimpse of young Jason, played by Callum Vinson, known for his role in the ‘Chucky’ television series. These images present a live-action depiction of Jason as a child, rather than the iconic, hockey-mask-wearing killer he eventually becomes, offering a unique perspective into the character’s backstory.

Set nearly a year after Jason’s drowning, the series follows Pamela as she attempts to cope with her grief. However, her life takes a turn when two strangers arrive at her door, probing into her past and triggering a disturbing series of events that leaves the town of Crystal Lake questioning her true identity. This series is described as a slow-burn character study rather than a straightforward slasher.

Kane has openly discussed how the show intentionally avoids simply replicating the expected formula of the franchise. He emphasized that they are not creating a ‘Friday the 13th’ movie, but rather a narrative focused on the town and a prequel centered on Jason’s mother, noting that the approach is quite different.

This distinction has allowed the creative team to shape the show according to their vision while still respecting the broader legacy of the franchise. Notably, the series shifts its setting to the 1970s, diverging from the late-1950s timeline previously established for Jason’s death in the original films.

The cast features William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, with Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik rounding out the ensemble. Michael Lennox directs several episodes, with additional episodes directed by Celine Held and Logan George, and story credits shared among Kane, Bryan Fuller, Jennifer Silverman, Pia Wilson, Evan Endicott, and Josh Stoddard.

All eight episodes of ‘Crystal Lake’ will be available for streaming on Peacock starting October 15, providing fans with a complete binge-ready experience just in time for Halloween. With Jason’s return to live-action finally underway after years of uncertainty, and rumors of a new feature film in early development, this prequel series appears to be just the beginning of a larger revival for the franchise.

Vinson’s casting aligns with a broader trend in his burgeoning career, as he continues to secure high-profile roles in genre productions. In addition to ‘Chucky’ and ‘Crystal Lake,’ he is set to appear in season three of ‘The Night Agent’ and has been cast as Atreus in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of ‘God of War,’ showcasing his growing résumé across major streaming properties.

For dedicated fans of the franchise, witnessing Jason as a vulnerable child rather than an unstoppable killer offers a refreshing angle on a character whose backstory has largely been conveyed through brief flashbacks and exposition in previous films. Whether this creative approach pays off will be revealed once the series premieres, but the marketing thus far suggests that Peacock and A24 are confident in their direction.
