DC Studios has been diligently expanding its rebooted cinematic universe over the past few years, blending superhero action with genre innovations that go beyond the typical blockbuster formula. The upcoming release signifies the studio’s first full venture into horror, marking a significant shift for a franchise primarily focused on capes and cosmic threats.

This new direction revolves around Clayface, a tragic villain from Batman’s rogues’ gallery, reimagined as a body horror thriller instead of a conventional action film. The narrative follows Matt Hagen, a Hollywood star whose life is shattered after a brutal disfigurement leads him to become a test subject for an experimental treatment aimed at restoring his original face, only for the procedure to result in a terrifying transformation into living clay.

To promote the film, DC Studios has unveiled a striking new poster featuring the tagline “Look Fear in the Face,” confirming that the film will hit theaters on October 23. The poster depicts a human face split down the middle, one half portrayed in realistic detail while the other is engulfed by a mass of dripping red clay, cascading down into a shadowy figure that looms over a city skyline.

This visual representation, showcasing a blend of man and monster, encapsulates the film’s core theme, emphasizing the horror of identity loss that accompanies Matt Hagen’s transformation. It serves as a notably unsettling piece of marketing for a DC release, fully embracing body horror elements rather than softening the character’s more grotesque comic book origins.

Tom Rhys Harries takes on the lead role, supported by a cast that includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James. Behind the scenes, James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, based on a story by Flanagan, drawing character inspiration from DC Comics’ extensive Clayface mythology.

The film boasts significant production talent, with Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn, and Peter Safran all involved, alongside executive producers Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther. The involvement of Gunn and Safran, who oversee the broader creative direction of DC Studios, highlights the importance of this genre shift in the studio’s overall strategy.

Filming for Clayface took place from late August to early November of last year, with locations in Liverpool and on soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England. The film’s plot is said to draw from “Feat of Clay,” a notable arc featuring Matt Hagen from ‘Batman: The Animated Series,’ establishing a direct connection to one of the character’s most celebrated animated portrayals.

Originally set for a September release, Clayface has now moved to October, positioning it within the fall horror lineup instead of competing with the busier summer blockbuster season. As the sixth installment in DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters saga, this film represents a genuine tonal experiment for the studio, betting that audiences are ready for the DC Universe to delve into darker, more psychologically unsettling themes alongside its traditional superhero fare.

With the new poster underscoring the marketing’s commitment to horror imagery, Clayface is poised to distinguish itself from previous DC Studios releases under Gunn and Safran’s leadership. It also arrives alongside a series of other significant DC projects slated for the coming years, including ‘Supergirl,’ the ‘Superman’ sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ and Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman: Part II,’ each representing a unique facet of the studio’s expanding lineup.
