‘The Office‘ concluded its run in May 2013 after nine memorable seasons, with the finale designed to provide fans with a sense of closure. Beloved characters like Michael Scott made a return to Dunder Mifflin, and the writers ensured that every significant relationship received a proper farewell.

Amidst this emotional send-off was a peculiar twist, introducing a wave of new hires to suggest that the paper company’s story could continue without its original cast. Among these fresh faces was Dakota Johnson, who portrayed an accountant named Dakota, stepping in for the fired Kevin Malone.

Johnson has openly shared her thoughts about the experience, candidly describing it during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “That was honestly the worst time of my life,” she remarked with a laugh as she reflected on her time on set.

Her explanation only added to the humor of her comment. She recounted being invited to guest star for what she believed would be a brief half-day shoot, only to find herself on set for two full weeks with minimal screen time, as she later told E! News.

Johnson described the atmosphere on set as more tense than celebratory. She noted that cast members who had worked together for a decade were grappling with unresolved issues, and there was little enthusiasm for welcoming a new face.

What adds a sting to her story is the original vision for her character. In a 2021 profile with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson revealed that her role, alongside Jake Lacy’s Pete and Clark Duke’s Clark, was intended to anchor a full ‘Office’ spinoff centered around this new generation of employees.

However, that spinoff never materialized, and Johnson has come to terms with it in her own dry manner. “If everything else just falls away, maybe you’ll find me in that Office spinoff that no one wants to watch,” she quipped during the same conversation.

She followed up with a more serious reflection on why some shows should be allowed to conclude naturally. Johnson expressed doubts about whether a continuation would have suited her creatively, especially considering how uncomfortable the finale shoot turned out to be.

It’s a curious footnote in light of the ongoing interest in ‘The Office’ universe, more than a decade later, including Peacock’s efforts to expand the franchise through spinoff projects. Johnson’s brief, background-heavy appearance serves as a reminder that not every attempt to prolong a beloved show’s legacy is successful.

For a franchise that continually finds ways to stay relevant, it’s oddly fitting that one of its most notable almost-spinoffs went largely unnoticed by fans. Johnson’s perspective adds a fun, slightly bittersweet footnote to a finale that continues to be cherished by viewers.
