Danny Boyle’s ‘Ink’ Trailer Showcases Guy Pearce and Jack O’Connell’s Tabloid Takeover
Danny Boyle has made a name for himself by captivating audiences with his dynamic and high-stakes storytelling, evident in works like ‘Trainspotting’ and ’28 Days Later’. His latest film, however, dives into a different realm, exploring the ruthless world of British newspaper publishing.
The movie tells the true story behind one of the most talked-about media empires of our time. ‘Ink’ focuses on Rupert Murdoch’s bold transformation of The Sun newspaper, beginning in 1969 when Murdoch took over the struggling paper and teamed up with editor Larry Lamb to create a sensationalist powerhouse.
Fans got their first glimpse of this intense narrative when DiscussingFilm released the debut trailer, confirming that Jack O’Connell and Guy Pearce lead the cast. The film chronicles the journey of the two men who revitalized ‘The Sun’ into the UK’s most notorious tabloid. The film is set to premiere on January 8 on Netflix and in UK theaters.
O’Connell portrays the newspaper’s editor Larry Lamb, while Pearce takes on the role of Rupert Murdoch, with Claire Foy joining the cast as Jules Davies. The film is adapted from the Tony-nominated stage play by James Graham, who also penned the screenplay. The trailer reveals scenes of reporters at ‘The Sun’ brainstorming strategies to increase readership, including sensationalizing violent stories and incorporating more sexual content.
Boyle himself described the cultural significance of the story, noting that long before the rise of Fox News, clickbait, and social media platforms, these two men managed to create a tabloid that became the best-selling newspaper globally. This framing positions ‘Ink’ not just as a historical piece but as an origin story for the media landscape we navigate today.
The film is already generating considerable buzz in the industry. ‘Ink’ will have its world premiere as the opening film of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it will vie for the Golden Lion, followed by a limited theatrical release in the US and its eventual debut on Netflix. Interestingly, even Murdoch’s family has commented on the film, with Pearce revealing during the Venice press that Murdoch’s daughter Elizabeth expressed her father’s approval of the casting, although according to The Hollywood Reporter, he had not seen the completed film at that time.
With awards season excitement building and a release date set for early January, ‘Ink’ is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing biopics of the upcoming year. What insights do you think Guy Pearce’s portrayal of Rupert Murdoch will unveil about the man behind the influential media empire?
