Star Wars enthusiasts have been speculating about the franchise’s future direction, especially following a significant leadership change at Lucasfilm earlier in 2026. With fresh voices now at the helm, every public statement from the leadership has been scrutinized for hints about upcoming developments.

This scrutiny intensified during D23, where Lucasfilm’s leadership provided much-needed clarity on the philosophy guiding the franchise’s future. The discussion featured some of Disney’s most prominent storytellers, focusing on how the company transforms its major franchises into real-world experiences.

During the Disney Worldbuilders panel at D23, Dave Filoni shared his strategy for the future of Star Wars. He articulated his approach, stating, “We have several different generations of Star Wars fans, right? There’s original trilogy fans, prequel fans, sequel trilogy fans, Clone Wars fans, expanded universe fans. They all have different interests. And I always look at how we’re going to serve all these different interests. And most importantly, how do we bring them all together because they have this common love of Star Wars.”

The panel also served as the world premiere for Leslie Iwerks’ documentary “Disney Worldbuilders,” which explores how major franchises are adapted into physical park experiences. Filoni shared the stage with Pixar’s Pete Docter, “Mandalorian and Grogu” director Jon Favreau, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Jared Bush, with the documentary debuting on Disney+ this past Thursday.

Filoni’s comments come at a particularly sensitive time for the franchise’s fanbase, as discussions surrounding different Star Wars eras have become increasingly divisive online. His statements sparked debate among fans, some of whom contested the notion that sequel trilogy fans constitute a distinct group, highlighting the fractured fan identity Filoni was addressing.

This isn’t the first time Filoni has hinted at his broader vision since assuming his leadership role earlier this year alongside ILM’s Lynwen Brennan. In a prior interview, he described his approach as having “an overarching idea” and building outward from there, rather than merely trying out various projects, marking a notable shift for a franchise that has faced criticism for inconsistent storytelling in recent years.

The current Star Wars release schedule already hints at how that vision might unfold. Following “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” Filoni is expected to return with Season 2 of “Ahsoka” in early 2027, followed by Shawn Levy’s “Starfighter” featuring Ryan Gosling that same May. Beyond these, further details remain limited, though Filoni has indicated that some upcoming projects were already “in motion” before he took over.

Fans eager for more concrete announcements may have to wait until Star Wars Celebration in April 2027, as Filoni is known for discussing broad concepts rather than revealing specifics too early. For now, his remarks at D23 provide the clearest insight yet into a guiding philosophy: focusing less on favoring specific eras and more on discovering the connections that unite every generation of fans back to the same galaxy far, far away.
